NHL Game Summary - Calgary at San Jose

Final Score: Calgary 4 - San Jose 3

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Dion Phaneuf tied the score inside the final minute of regulation and Jarome Iginla tallied the game-winner 4:35 into overtime, as the Calgary Flames rallied for a 4-3 victory over San Jose at the Shark Tank.

Daymond Langkow and Mark Smith also scored for Calgary, which has won three of its last four games and moved into sole possession of second place in the Northwest Division. Miika Kiprusoff made 40 saves for the Flames, who now trail the Minnesota Wild by two points.

Patrick Rissmiller, Marcel Goc and Milan Michalek scored for the Sharks, who are 3-1-1 on their current six-game homestand which concludes on Thursday versus Edmonton. Evgeni Nabokov allowed four goals on 18 shots in the loss.

"It erased a great effort -- we became passive in the last three or four minutes," said Sharks head coach Ron Wilson.

After Rissmiller scored earlier in the third period to put San Jose ahead 3-2, his defensive mistake inside the final minute led to Calgary's third goal. After a save by Nabokov, Rissmiller tried a backhanded clear, but failed to use the glass and Phaneuf kept it inside the blue line before his wrister from the left point lit the lamp with 50 seconds to play in regulation.

"(Rissmiller) got the puck and he should've chipped it to the corner," said Wilson. "He thought he was making a good play, but he cleared it (directly) to their defenseman and then we didn't block the shot."

In overtime, Phaneuf held control along the right-wing side and drew three defenders toward him before he sent a pass across the high slot for Iginla, whose rocket one-timer from above the left circle flew past Nabokov and the Flames skated off with the victory.

With the score tied 2-2 in the third, a strong forechecking effort by Rissmiller led to his seventh goal at the 8:33 mark. Rissmiller performed his first-man-in duty to perfection and gained control of the puck along the rear boards before he gave it to Torrey Mitchell. Mitchell then fed the puck into the right slot for a one-timer by Mike Grier that Rissmiller deflected home out of midair from beneath the right circle.

After Langkow opened the scoring with his 22nd goal 4:20 into the first period, the Sharks tied the score later in the stanza on Goc's fourth marker of the campaign.

San Jose was buzzing in its offensive zone for most of a two-minute power play that was awarded due to a hooking minor on Alex Tanguay at the 8:55 mark. The hosts failed to cash in, but they kept their momentum and eventually found the back of the net with 8:20 to go before the first intermission. Goc out-hustled Phaneuf for control of a loose puck in the neutral zone, streaked down the right-wing side and beat Kiprusoff with a wrister from inside the circle.

Calgary regained its lead when Smith was credited with his first goal of the season during a scramble in the goal mouth near the two-minute mark of the second period. Referee Kerry Fraser lost sight of the disc among heavy traffic in the crease and the puck eventually crossed the line.

But with 32.6 seconds to play in the second, San Jose again drew even, this time courtesy of Michalek's power-play goal. Jonathan Cheechoo held control along the left half-wall and sent a pass back to Craig Rivet at the centerpoint. Rivet's eyes led Kiprusoff to believe a shot was on the way, but instead Rivet fed a pass to Michalek, who corralled the puck at the base of the left circle and moved to his backhand before he slid home his 19th goal.
