NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Detroit

Final Score: Anaheim 3 - Detroit 2

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Mathieu Schneider had a goal and an assist and Detroit had a goal disallowed with 40 seconds left as the Anaheim Ducks held on to beat the Red Wings, 3-2, at Joe Louis Arena.

With Detroit putting on the offensive pressure with the goaltender pulled in favor of the extra attacker in the closing seconds, Nicklas Lidstrom's slap shot from the point got past Jean-Sebastien Giguere for what would have been the tying goal. However, Tomas Holmstrom was whistled for goaltender interference and the goal was waved off. Detroit was unable to get the equalizer and Anaheim walked away with the two points.

"It was a tough call," Giguere said of the disallowed goal. "A lot of times they don't call that. It took a lot of guts to call it. The replay showed (Holmstrom) had a skate in the crease and it was preventing me from doing what I've got to do . It's not a popular call, except with the goalies, but it was the right call."

Ryan Carter and Kent Huskins also tallied for Anaheim, which has won four straight games after dropping the previous six.

Giguere had a solid game for the Ducks, stopping 27-of-29 shots.

Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen accounted for the Red Wings goals. Detroit has lost three in a row after winning the previous eight.

Chris Osgood made 16 saves for Detroit.

With Anaheim holding a 3-1 lead after two periods, Franzen's power-play tally 6:06 into the third got the Wings back to within one.

Detroit continued to generate quality scoring chances throughout the remainder of the contest and pulled the goaltender in favor of the extra attacker in the closing seconds, but couldn't manage the equalizer.

"Every night when you play a good team, you get challenged in a different way," Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock said. "Tonight Anaheim challenged us physically."

Detroit got on the board with 5:44 left in the opening stanza while on the power play. With Scott Niedermayer in the box serving a tripping infraction, Datsyuk tipped home a Lidstrom point shot to give the Red Wings the early lead.

Carter's goal tied things at 1-1 with 2:11 left in the frame. Niedermayer attempted to flip the puck in front from behind the net, but hit Carter, who was standing on the goal line and the disc trickled passed Osgood to even the contest.

Anaheim took a 2-1 lead 8:28 into the second when Schneider's shot from the point got through several players and beat a screened Osgood to put the Ducks in front.

The Ducks then got a great individual effort from Huskins, who carried the puck end-to-end and flipped a backhander passed Osgood to put the visitors ahead by two heading into the second intermission.
