Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Evgeni Malkin scored two power play goals and added an assist and Dany Sabourin saved 26-of-28 shots, leading the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Los Angeles Kings, 4-2, at Mellon Arena.
Malkin now has 19 points in the nine games the Penguins have played since Sidney Crosby went out with a high ankle sprain on January 18. He leads the team with 69 points.
Ryan Malone pitched in with a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who have won three of their last four games and with 67 points have taken over first place in the Atlantic Division.
"Now that Geno's (Malkin) under the microscope everybody is seeing how good he is," said Malone. "He's up there with all the best players in the league. He's just proving that now, we all knew that before, but now everybody else is realizing that just as well."
Derek Armstrong and Brian Boyle both lit the lamp for the Kings, who had a two game win streak snapped. Jason LaBarbera made 32 saves in the loss.
"We didn't play as good as we could in the first and second period," said Armstrong. "We got to score on the power play, sometimes the power play got to bail you out, but it didn't happen today. The work ethic we had lately wasn't there in the first and second period."
Pittsburgh opened the scoring at the 11:09 mark of the first period. On a 5- on-3 power play, Malone skated in on net from the left corner and shot the puck. It was stopped, but the rebound squirted to Malkin in the slot and he ripped a shot into the back left corner of the net.
Just 54 seconds into the second period, Pittsburgh made it 2-0 when Malone skated in the Kings zone and fired a wrist shot that went over the glove of LaBarbera.
With 8:19 remaining in the second period, Malkin added his second power play goal of the day when he received a pass from Ryan Whitney and blasted a slap shot from the right circle.
The Penguins continued to put the pressure on as Jordan Staal made it 4-0 when he put a loose puck in the back of the net with 2.7 second remaining in the second period.
The Kings made it 4-1 1:54 into the third period when Armstrong scored on a bouncing puck in front of the net.
Boyle scored the final goal of the game to make it 4-2 with 1:32 to play as he received a cross-ice pass from Alexander Frolov and he slammed the puck home.
