Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Alexander Frolov had a goal and two assists, as the Los Angeles Kings scored four third-period goals to stun the Detroit Red Wings, 5-3, at Joe Louis Arena.
Brad Stuart also had a goal and two assists, and Kyle Calder recorded a goal and assist for Los Angeles, which has won two in a row. Anze Kopitar and Patrick O'Sullivan also tallied, while Jason LaBarbera turned aside 26 shots in the win.
"It's always great when you can come back and win a game in the third period, but it's much better when you can do it on the road against the best team in the league," Stuart said.
Henrik Zetterberg had two goals, and Tomas Kopecky added the third for Detroit, which had its eight-game winning streak come to a screeching halt. Chris Osgood allowed all five goals on 25 shots in the loss.
The Red Wings held a comfortable 3-1 lead heading into the final period, after Zetterberg scored the only goal of the second frame.
But O'Sullivan scored just 39 seconds into the third to bring the Kings within one. He corralled a loose rebound in the right circle, and sent a shot over Osgood's blocker on the far side.
At the 6:15 mark, with Detroit's Jiri Hudler in the box for hooking, Frolov tied the game. Calder sent a pass from the right circle to the left, where Frolov ripped a one-timer past Osgood.
Nearly seven minutes later, Stuart pushed the Kings ahead for the first time all game on a power play shot from the point. Then, with 5:21 left in the game, Kopitar gave the Kings some breathing room.
He got the puck in the slot with his back to the net, and snapped a left- handed backhander toward the net, which skimmed Osgood's glove and fluttered across the goal line. It was Kopitar's 22nd of the season, and ended LA's offensive flurry.
The Kings and Red Wings each recorded 10 shots in the period, but only Los Angeles was able to capitalize.
"They got a real early goal there and that's one thing we didn't want to happen," Zetterberg said. "After that they kind of took over the momentum and scored another one on the power play. After that it was tough for us to get back."
Detroit set the tone early, as Kopecky scored just 49 seconds into the contest. After Calder tied the game midway through the first period, the Red Wings reclaimed the lead.
Zetterberg took a narrow-angle shot from the left side of the goal line, and the puck bounced off LaBarbera's back into the net. It came with 1:09 left in the period, and set Detroit into the second with a 2-1 lead.
Zetterberg then scored his 33rd of the season at the 13:05 mark of the second period, sliding in a wraparound by the right post.
