St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Mike Smith stopped all 25 shots he faced en route to his second shutout of the season as the Dallas Stars pulled out a 1-0 win over the Minnesota Wild.
Niklas Hagman's goal early in the third period proved to be all the offense Smith needed as the Stars extended their winning streak to five. Loui Eriksson and Jussi Jokinen each notched assists on Hagman's tally.
Smith started in place of starter Marty Turco, who didn't make the trip to Minnesota while nursing a sore neck.
"Every win is big right now, to keep this roll going," Smith said. "We've got five in a row now, and obviously the confidence in our room is high and we've just got to find a a way to keep it going."
Niklas Backstrom nearly equaled Smith, stopping 25-of-26 shots for the Wild, who lost their second straight after a three-game win streak. Mikko Koivu led all players with five shots on goal.
After two periods without a goal, the Stars finally broke the scoreless tie 3:11 into the final period. Smith's outstanding save on a Marian Gaborik shot started a Dallas rush that Hagman finished off with a spectacular move that faked out Backstrom, and a backhand flip gave the Stars the first goal of the night.
Smith turned back eight shots from the Wild in the final period as the Stars held off Minnesota's last-ditch effort to get on the board and force overtime.
Neither team managed to break through for the first 40 minutes of play. Dallas had several chances on a four-minute power play late in the second period, but the Wild penalty kill held strong, denying all six Stars power plays through the first two periods.
"The kills were huge for us obviously," said Minnesota forward Brian Rolston. "But, our defense got buckled from killing all those penalties. Still, we went out at our best."
Minnesota nearly got on the board with a number of chances in the final minute of the period, but Gaborik had the puck roll off his stick on a breakaway, and Smith denied several Minnesota chances in a flurry in front of the net in the last 15 seconds of the period as the game remained scoreless heading into the final stanza.
