Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Brenden Morrow's goal in the sixth round of the shootout lifted the Dallas Stars over the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2, at American Airlines Center.
Morrow took a clear path to the net and sent a wrist shot high over the right shoulder of Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo. At the other end, Dallas netminder Marty Turco swallowed a wrister by Taylor Pyatt to seal the victory for the Stars, who have beaten Vancouver seven straight times at home.
Morrow also scored and added an assist in regulation for the Stars, who have won four consecutive games and sit atop the Pacific Division, four points ahead of idle San Jose. Jere Lehtinen also tallied, while Turco ended with 22 saves.
"I'm just doing what I need to do on the ice," said Turco. "I need everything I have in the tank for us to win this time of year. It's just mano y mano and you just read and reach and try to make stops. We are just looking at getting our bodies and our games up for the stretch run."
Markus Naslund had both goals for the Canucks, who have dropped the first three games of a four-game road trip and dropped eight of nine overall. Luongo stopped 32 shots, but hasn't won in regulation since blanking the New York Rangers on Jan. 3, going 3-5-3. The three wins all came in shootouts.
"We worked hard, but we didn't win the game," said Luongo. "We have to find a way to win."
Both sides traded markers in the opening stanza, though Vancouver was first on the board with its power-play tally at 12:50.
The goal materialized after Sami Salo faked a slap shot and feed the puck down low to Mason Raymond, who then dished to Naslund at the top of the crease. Naslund quickly snapped the puck over Turco, boosting the Canucks to a 1-0 lead.
The Stars answered back with an even-strength tally, as several players crashed the net and tried to redirect Morrow's shot behind Luongo. Morrow eventually got credit for the goal, though it appeared to deflect off the skate of Alexandre Burrows on its way over the goal line at 16:40.
Lehtinen then boosted the Stars on top at 7:11 of the second period, as he tapped Morrow's centering feed under a falling Luongo to make it 2-1.
Vancouver bounced back though, as Naslund beat Turco by firing a shot into a nearly empty net with 1:13 remaining. Turco got caught following the play leading up to the goal, as Byron Ritchie knocked Mattias Norstrom off the puck behind the Stars' net. He then nabbed the loose disc and connected with a wide-open Naslund in the slot.
