St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Daniel Cleary struck with 1:20 remaining in regulation to force overtime and Brett Lebda scored in the extra session, as the surging Detroit Red Wings came back to down the Minnesota Wild, 3-2, at Xcel Energy Center.
Johan Franzen also scored for the Red Wings, who have now won eight in a row. Dominik Hasek made 23 saves, improving his record to 10-0-0 with two ties versus the Wild.
Brian Rolston and Pavol Demitra scored for Minnesota, which had a three-game winning streak halted. Niklas Backstrom stopped 35 shots in a losing effort.
Head coach Jacques Lemaire said afterwards that, even in a loss, it may have been the best performance by his team all season.
"It gives you a little bad taste, but on the other hand you have to look at the positive," Lemaire said.
The Wild appeared to have the game sealed but an odd-angle shot in the waning moments got past Backstrom, who had put forth a quality performance up until that point.
Cleary gained control along the left wall, moved down toward the goal line and let go a wrister that somehow found its way past Backstrom and into the back of the cage.
The Red Wings completed the comeback win 1:37 into overtime. Henrik Zetterberg held the puck behind the goal line before dishing into the high slot, where a streaking Lebda one-timed the game-winner home.
Detroit drew first blood midway through the opening period, as Franzen jumped on a loose puck in the left circle and snapped a shot past Backstrom.
Rolston knotted the contest at 1-1 just over a minute later with his 20th marker of the season. He emerged from behind the goal line and stuffed the puck past a sprawling Hasek. The power-play goal was scored at 11:10.
Demitra then struck 5:36 into the second to put the Wild in front. Minnesota broke out on a counter-rush, and Demitra unleashed a heavy slap shot from the top of the left circle that sailed just underneath the right crossbar.
The scoring went silent until the final moments of the third, when Detroit struck to force overtime.
