St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - T.J. Hensick and Ben Guite each notched a pair of goals as the Colorado Avalanche picked up a wild 6-4 road win over the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center.
Tyler Arnason tallied a goal and an assist for the Avs, who won for just the second time in their last five games. Jaroslav Hlinka also lit the lamp for Colorado, while Wojtek Wolski had a pair of helpers.
Peter Budaj made 28 saves for Colorado in the win.
"(The two points were) huge for us," said Hensick. "We've been battling each night. You lose a game; you're at the bottom of your division. You win a game, you're back up there. For us to get a win on the road is huge and hopefully we can get one Monday night at home. Hopefully two good games for us and hit the road again."
Paul Kariya, Andy McDonald, Dan Hinote and Keith Tkachuk all scored goals for the Blues, who had their two-game winning streak snapped and who have lost eight of their last 10 outings.
Brad Boyes and David Backes each contributed a pair of assists, but All-Star goalie Manny Legace allowed five goals on just 23 shots.
The Blues never led in a back-and-forth game that saw St. Louis respond almost immediately after every Avalanche goal.
Hensick opened the scoring 5:28 into the contest, taking a pass from Ian Laperriere in the left circle and roofing the puck over Legace's intended poke check.
Former Avs tough guy Hinote tied the game up for the Blues 48 seconds later, working from behind the net and stuffing a backhand shot between Budaj's skate and the goalpost to erase Colorado's advantage.
Hlinka's sixth score of the season, coming with 6:18 left in the first again put Colorado in front by a goal, but Kariya responded for St. Louis just 52 seconds later. With the Blues on the power play, Boyes slid a cross-ice pass to Kariya, who fired a blistering wrist shot past a lunging Budaj to tie the game up at 2-2.
With Budaj on the bench in favor of an extra attacked due to a delayed penalty halfway through the second period, Guite set up in front of the net and deflected Wolski's shot from the point between Legace's legs, with the puck barely sliding past the goal line for Guite's fifth tally of the year.
Hensick struck again with the Avs on the power play in the first minute of the third, charging in front of the net, scooping up a pass from Arnason and chipping the puck over Legace to put Colorado up 4-2.
McDonald cut the Avs lead to one 6:24 into the third. David Perron steamrolled down the right wing leading a three-on-two rush, but slammed on the brakes in the right circle and fired a pass to McDonald, who one-timed the puck past Budaj.
However, Arnason picked up a loose puck behind the next with 8:44 remaining, drove to the net and stuffed a backhander underneath a sprawling Legace to put Colordao up 5-3.
More than a minute later, though, Tkachuk, stationed in the left circle, took a pass from Backes and fired a wrist shot past Budaj to once again bring St. Louis back within a goal.
Colorado was finally able to put the stubborn St. Louis squad away with six seconds left when Guite blocked Kariya's slap shot and fired the puck nearly the entire length of the ice into the empty St. Louis net to lock up the win.
"I thought it was a very competitive game and both teams worked hard," said Avs head coach Joel Quenneville. "We got some breaks at the end there, the posts were ringing pretty loudly...three or four of them. We were lucky to hang on. I like how they completed. We scored some goals. We had a hard time scoring goals on the power play and we chipped in a big one which is important and we got through and it was a big win for us."
