San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Jeremy Roenick scored in the fifth round of the shootout to lift San Jose over Chicago, 3-2, at HP Pavilion.
Roenick broke from the neutral zone and skated wide right, before closing in on Nikolai Khabibulin and beating the netminder clean on a wrist shot that rang just inside the left post.
Evgeni Nabokov then gloved a shot by Cam Barker to seal the win for the Sharks, who kicked off a six-game homestand, their longest of the season.
"Every point is so crucial so the next game is really important again," said Nabokov. "We're in a dogfight for first place in our division and that's our goal and we've got to keep playing well and I thought today we played well."
Jonathan Cheechoo and Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored in regulation, and Nabokov ended with 19 saves for San Jose, which has won four of its last five games. Joe Thornton and Craig Rivet each added a pair of assists.
Patrick Sharp and Duncan Keith scored for Chicago, which continued a seven- game road swing after dropping the first test Wednesday at Colorado. Khabibulin, who ended with 38 saves, has failed to win a game since December 26.
"Its tough to get anything by that goaltender (Nabokov)," said Sharp. "I thought our team battled hard today and we can be really happy with the way we played. Its always disappointing to lose in a shootout like that but I think we can hold our heads high and know that we played a good game today."
With the score tied heading to the third, Vlasic put the Sharks in front with a goal at the 3:30 mark, ending a 69-game scoreless drought. The visitors answered right back, though, as Keith unloaded on a slap shot and beat Nabokov to the stick-side at 5:14, making it a 2-2 game.
The home team then worked hard, peppering Khabibulin with six shots in overtime, but the winning goal remained elusive. Nabokov was also just as stingy at the other end, turning aside two Blackhawks' chances.
Chicago got the only goal of the first period, and it came with just 1:10 remaining. Barker took the initial shot from the point, and the puck appeared to be heading wide of the net. Sharp, though, cut in front of the crease and deflected the puck past Nabokov.
The Sharks tied it on a two-man advantage in the second, as Cheechoo beat Khabibulin on a hard angle from the left side. The goal came after penalties on Barker and Sharp just 24 seconds apart created the 5-on-3.
San Jose then had a huge chance to grab the lead when Thornton rumbled through the neutral zone and broke in alone on Khabibulin. The netminder got his right pad out, however, and managed to deflect the shot with 4:28 left.
The score remained even, but San Jose led in shots on goal, 26-12, heading to the third.
