San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Cheechoo scored two power-play goals and Joe Thornton registered three assists, as San Jose defeated the St. Louis Blues, 4-1, at the Shark Tank.
Milan Michalek tallied a goal and two assists and Evgeni Nabokov made 17 saves for the Sharks, who have won two straight following a four-game winless skid. Steve Bernier also scored for San Jose, which entered the All-Star break tied with Dallas for first place in the Pacific Division. Both teams have 61 points.
"It's good we won these two games, we have to rest now and forget about hockey now for a couple of days and regenerate and win the games upcoming," Michalek said.
Brad Boyes scored the only goal for the slumping Blues, who are now winless in their last seven games overall (0-5-2). Manny Legace allowed four goals on 26 shots in the loss.
Following a scoreless opening period, the Sharks grabbed the lead at the 6:57 mark of the second. Thornton and Michalek worked a 2-on-1 down low and Michalek whiffed on his first attempt from beneath the right circle. The puck, though, stayed on his stick and he backhanded it over the right shoulder of Legace.
Cheechoo's eighth goal -- a power-play marker 3:19 into the middle stanza -- gave San Jose a 2-0 advantage. Thornton held the puck along the right half- wall and passed to Michalek beneath the right circle. Michalek then sent a quick backhand pass across the top of the crease for Cheechoo, who punched home a one-timer from near the left post.
"It was a tight game and we were right in it," St. Louis coach Andy Murray said. "But we took an unnecessary penalty and put them on the power play and they capitalized when we made a coverage mistake in our zone. When you play the type of schedule we have played you have to play smarter in those types of situations."
After Bernier's 13th goal at 8:05 of the third pushed the San Jose lead to three, the Blues finally found the scoreboard after San Jose's Patrick Rissmiller was whistled for high-sticking.
The visitors needed only 10 seconds with the man advantage before Boyes lit the lamp for the 29th time this season. Following a faceoff win inside the right circle, the Blues crisply worked the puck around the perimeter and Andy McDonald passed from the high slot into the left circle for a successful one- timer by Boyes at 10:45.
Cheechoo's tally with 4:53 remaining in regulation capped the scoring.
