Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Dominik Hasek continued his stellar play for the Red Wings, turning aside 24 shots as Detroit held off Anaheim, 2-1, at the Honda Center.
Since December 4, Hasek is 12-2-1 with three shutouts. Two have come in the month of January, when he is 6-1-0, with his only loss a 3-2 defeat against Ottawa on January 12.
Brian Rafalski scored, and Valtteri Filppula's tally stood as the game-winner for the Red Wings, who continued to dominate on the road this season. The team is 17-6-2 away from Joe Louis Arena thus far, and has outscored opponents 35-13 in going 9-1-0 in its last 10 road contests.
Detroit has also won four consecutive games overall.
"I thought it was very much like a playoff game out there," said Red Wings defenseman Niklas Lidstrom. "There were two really competitive teams that wanted to win. We've had our battles in the past, with last year's playoffs. You can tell that both teams were really competing out there. I still think we came out strong. Early on, they were coming at us a little bit but once we settled down, once we got that first goal I thought we played with a lot more composure."
Chris Pronger had the lone tally, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 31-of-33 shots for the Ducks, who have dropped two straight on the heels of a six-game win streak.
"It's a challenge to play the elite teams, and Detroit is an elite team," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "They're the best team in the league this year. They didn't sneak into this building and us not know who they were. These are the type of games it's going to take and we're going to have to win our share of these to continue to have success."
Things got heated early in the first period, as Pronger rammed Wings forward Dan Cleary in the corner. Both players then dropped the gloves and Pronger got in a few good shots early on, but lost his balance and fell to the ice. Cleary quickly pounced on him and delivered several hard shots to the side of the head before the linesmen jumped in.
The fisticuffs came about a minute after Detroit center Johan Franzen was sent off for crosschecking, and when all was said and done, the teams had combined for 34 penalty minutes in a wild first period.
Lost in the shuffle was Rafalski's power-play goal at 11:52, as he one-timed a hard slapshot under the glove of Giguere to put the Wings on top.
Detroit then jumped to a 2-0 lead following an Anaheim turnover in the second period. Francois Beauchemin's stick broke on a clearing attempt and the disc slid right to Filppula in the neutral zone. Filppula then ended a 2-on-1 by slipping the puck behind Giguere at 7:52.
Pronger pulled the Ducks back in it when he beat Hasek through a screen at 8:05 of the third period, with Anaheim skating on the power play.
The home squad, however, couldn't solve the netminder again before the final horn, with their best chance coming on a wraparound attempt by Todd Marchant with four minutes left. A backhand attempt by Todd Bertuzzi also drifted wide of the goal with 1:38 remaining.
