Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Osgood stopped 27 shots for his third shutout of the season, as the Detroit Red Wings topped the Los Angeles Kings, 3-0, at the Staples Center.
Mikael Samuelsson had a goal and assist, and Tomas Holmstrom and Johan Franzen also scored for the Red Wings, who have won three in a row and continue to excel on the road. Detroit has won eight of its past nine away from home, and is 17-6-2 overall this season.
Additionally, Osgood notched his 356th career win, breaking a tie with Rogie Vachon for 15th place all-time.
"I'm not thinking as much out there," Osgood said. "I'm just plain calmer now that I'm older. I want to win a ton of games by the time I'm done playing."
Jason LaBarbera stopped 24-of-27 shots, but the Kings couldn't crack the Detroit defense, and dropped their second game in the past three. Los Angeles has now lost four in a row against Detroit.
Holmstrom scored 6:57 into the first period, off a cross-ice pass from Pavel Datsyuk. Holmstrom skated across the inner edge of the right circle, got the feed from Datsyuk as he faded sideways, and ripped a shot past LaBarbera.
Osgood stopped 12 shots in the same stanza to keep the Kings off the board.
The second period was scoreless until Samuelsson lit the lamp with 5:13 left. Red Wings forward Matt Ellis tied up a Kings player along the right boards of Detroit's defensive zone, freeing up the puck in the process.
Samuelsson scooped the disc up, raced across the blue lines in front of every LA player, and fired a wrist shot over LaBarbera's glove.
"You need to get the lead on a good team like that," Kings head coach Marc Crawford said. "But we didn't...They won't allow you to win if you don't play a good game. We have to play better to beat that club."
Franzen then scored just 2:55 into the third period, and Osgood stopped all nine shots he faced in the final stanza to ice the win.
