Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Dany Sabourin made 31 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Pittsburgh Penguins won their first game without All-Star Sidney Crosby, 2-0, over Montreal at the Bell Centre.
Crosby, the reigning Hart Trophy winner was injured in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning after he was pulled down from behind by defenseman Paul Ranger. Crosby slammed into the end boards, jamming his right foot with 12:23 left in the first period.
Crosby had his injured right ankle examined Saturday, but a prognosis will not be known until next week. He will undergo a more thorough examination once swelling subsides in the ankle, the team announced. This type of injury usually sidelines a player for at least a month.
The 20-year-old Crosby has 20 goals and 43 assists, which is tied for second place with two other players.
Jeff Taffe and Evgeni Malkin each had a goal for the Penguins, who have won two of their last three and 10 of 12 overall. They are 7-2 in the month of January.
"With back-to-back games (starting goaltender) Ty Conklin needed a rest," said Penguins head coach Michel Therrien. "He's played a lot of hockey lately and played really well for us. Sabourin played really well here in training camp, and tonight he was outstanding. There is no doubt that we discussed how to play the Canadiens without Sid (Crosby), but it's an adversity we faced before. We approached tonight with a tight checking game and didn't give up too many scoring chances. The guys really bought into."
Cristobal Huet stopped 24-of-25 shots for Montreal, which had a two-game winning streak halted.
"This game is not an excuse for us," said Montreal captain Saku Koivu. "I don't think its a physical or mental game coming after winning three of four on the road. It just seems that most other teams win on the road and then win the first game back home. We have two more games here at home before the break, so we have to win."
The Penguins grabbed a 1-0 lead just 6:14 into the contest. Georges Laraque had the puck behind the net and used his body to shield off a checker. From the right side he flicked a backhander out front that Taffe redirected into the net for his second goal of the season.
Sabourin needed to make nine saves in the first period to keep Montreal off the board.
Montreal completely dominated the second period and outshot Pittsburgh, 17-9, but Sabourin made several big saves, including a pair late in the frame to keep the Habs from lighting the lamp.
The Habs had trouble establishing any offensive pressure in the third period as they were only able to throw five shots on net, all of which Sabourin turned aside.
Malkin sealed the win with an empty-net goal with just 12.4 seconds to play.
