NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Detroit

Final Score: Vancouver 2 - Detroit 3

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Henrik Zetterberg scored the only goal of the shootout, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks at Joe Louis Arena.

After the first shooter for each team missed, Zetterberg sent a well-timed backhander between the pads of goaltender Roberto Luongo. Dominik Hasek made saves on the next two Vancouver shots to preserve the win.

"It was a simple, yet brilliant play," Luongo said of Zetterberg's goal. "He carried in on his forehand, went to the backhand, waited for an opening and put it through the five-hole."

Hasek made 26 saves overall for Detroit, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Daniel Cleary scored twice for the Red Wings, who are 5-4 in shootouts this season.

Luongo was busy all night, and turned aside 47-of-49 in the loss, the second in a row for the Canucks. Henrik Sedin had a goal and an assist, and Markus Naslund also tallied in the loss.

Detroit peppered Luongo with 16 shots in the first period, and eventually got one through with 1:44 left in the stanza. Cleary deflected Andreas Lilja's shot from the left point, which got by Luongo on the glove side.

The Red Wings then scored just 1:51 into the middle frame, as Cleary -- skating near the right side of the crease -- redirected a pass from Valtteri Filppula through Luongo's pads.

"I've been playing with good players. I've been in front of the net," Cleary said. "I shoot when I get a chance and go to the net when I have a chance."

But Detroit, which also had 16 shots in the second period, and leads the NHL in shots per game, went silent from that point on. Sedin scored with 4:39 left in the second period, and Naslund tied up the game, 2-2, nearly three minutes later.

The Red Wings had an opportunity to end the game in overtime, going on the man-advantage after Luongo was called for a delay of game. He swatted a rebound over the glass 2:39 into the extra session, but the Canucks successfully killed the penalty.
