NHL Game Summary - Dallas at San Jose

Final Score: Dallas 4 - San Jose 2

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Mike Modano scored twice to lift Dallas over San Jose, 4-2, in a Pacific Division clash at HP Pavilion.

Niklas Hagman and Jeff Halpern also scored for the Stars, who stopped a three- game skid and moved into a tie for second place in the Pacific with the Sharks. Anaheim vaulted into first place following its 2-1 win in Nashville earlier Thursday.

We need the points, it is a logjam right at the top there," said Stars head coach Dave Tippett. "It's going to continue to be a battle. So there's going to be lots of teams pushing and you have to get into the situation where you just have to control what you can control and that's your team and get as many points as you can."

Marty Turco stopped 28-of-30 shots to earn his 18th win of the season.

Milan Michalek and Joe Thornton lit the lamp for the Sharks, who have dropped three games in succession.

Evgeni Nabokov surrendered all four goals on 31 shots.

Dallas took a 3-2 lead on Modano's second of the contest with 7:06 left in regulation. Hagman fired a shot from the right point which Nabokov kicked aside, but right to the veteran sniper, who rifled the puck home from the right circle.

Halpern slid a shot through Nabokov with 2:09 to go, and the Sharks did not pull him from the net until 29 seconds remained. Dallas did not allow a quality chance down the stretch and picked up its 26th win of the year.

We had a great start to the third period, tied the game, and then it's hard to explain the mistakes, but we got caught late on a shift and a couple of guys were tired because we didn't apply any pressure up the ice," Sharks head coach Ron Wilson said. "It seems every time we've played them in our building, they have outwaited us, and as the game has gone on, we've found a way to shoot ourselves in the feet."

The Sharks got on the board 6:11 into the contest, off a broken play. Alexei Semenov came down the left side on a 2-on-1 with Curtis Brown, but his pass caused Brown to drift towards the right boards along the goal line. Brown didn't get all he wanted on his shot, but the puck settled in the slot for Michalek, who slammed it home.

Hagman tied the game at 10:47, when he broke free from a pair of Sharks checkers, took a pass from Loui Eriksson, and stashed a shot to the near side.

Modano notched his 13th goal of the season late in the second period, giving Dallas a 2-1 lead by one-timing a feed from Eriksson.

San Jose tied the game at the 3:23 mark of the third, as Thornton carried down the left wing, faked a shot, and slid a hard pass to the slot. Bernier was waiting for the puck outside the crease, but the disc hit Stars defenseman Matt Niskanen and deflected under the crossbar.
