Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Bill Guerin scored twice, and Rick DiPietro made 37 saves, as the New York Islanders defeated the New Jersey Devils, 3-1, at the Prudential Center.
Michael Sillinger also tallied for New York, which has won three of four overall. The Islanders have won six straight against the Atlantic Division- leading Devils, including all five meetings this season.
Travis Zajac scored the lone goal for New Jersey, which failed to take sole possession of first place in the division. The Devils entered the contest tied with idle Pittsburgh at 55 points. Martin Brodeur turned away 20 shots in the loss.
Guerin started the scoring with 4:51 left in the opening period on a 5-on-3 advantage. After receiving a cross-ice pass from Mike Comrie between the left circle and the goal line, he fired a quick, narrow-angled shot into the upper portion of the net.
The puck bounced out, leading to some confusion on Brodeur's part, but the goal was upheld, giving the Islanders a 1-0 lead.
Sillinger then put New York ahead by two 4:17 into the second period. Trent Hunter took the puck behind the net, then sent a pass out front for Sillinger, who one-timed it past Brodeur for his 11th goal of the season.
Zajac brought the Devils back within one, 7:11 into the final period, but the Islanders' defense was successful in holding New Jersey at bay. The Devils had a combined 29 shots on goal in the second and third periods, and five power play opportunities.
But DiPietro stopped all but one shot, and the Isles killed off every power play. Guerin added an empty-net goal with one minute left to cement the win.
