NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Buffalo

Final Score: New Jersey 3 - Buffalo 2

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Zach Parise and Patrik Elias scored in the shootout to help New Jersey to a 3-2 win, while sending Buffalo to a franchise-record ninth straight loss.

Both Parise and Elias managed to fake shots against Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller before tucking the puck past him. Parise scored on the forehand, while Elias slid a backhand shot between the netminder's pads to win it for the Devils.

Paul Martin and Dave Clarkson scored in regulation, and Martin Brodeur -- who was perfect in the shootout against two Buffalo skaters -- finished with 21 saves as the Devils won their third straight and are now 19-5-1 in their last 25 games.

"A lot of it is confidence in the shootout," said Sabres defenseman Brian Campbell. "If you get off to a hot start you feel pretty good about it. It's a tough way to lose the game. Last year it was almost a guaranteed two points and this year it's been the other way."

Dan Paille had both goals for Buffalo, which played without injured regulars Maxim Afinogenov (groin), Derek Roy (shoulder) and Tim Connolly (groin). Defenseman Jaroslav Spacek was also sidelined due to back spasms.

Miller ended with 23 saves on the night, as the Sabres fell to 0-4-5 since a shootout victory at Philadelphia on December 22. The nine-game winless streak is the longest since October 25-November 19, 2002 and five of the losses have come in the shootout.

"We were kind of shaking our heads ," said Paille. "It's something we have to work with. We're struggling (to score) goals in the shootout. One of these days we'll get a win in it."

The Sabres opened the scoring just 58 seconds into the contest, as Drew Stafford played the puck along the left wing and dished to Campbell in front. Campbell then slid the puck to Paille, who fanned on a shot at the top of the crease but had the puck deflect off his skate. The disc then went up and over Brodeur's glove to make it 1-0.

Paille then notched his second of the night when he took a shot from a hard angle to the left of the net and somehow got the puck to trickle between Brodeur's pads at 10:38.

The Devils cut it to 2-1 in the second on Martin's third of the season, a long shot from the point that deflected off Miller's glove and fluttered just inside the crossbar at 13:47.

A late goal in the third then tied the game, as Clarkson played the puck off the endboards and wrapped it around the left side, stuffing it between Miller's pad and the near post with just 1:07 left in the contest.
