Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Daniel Alfredsson had two goals, including the game-winner with 2:56 to play as the Ottawa Senators downed the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2, in a battle between conference leaders at Scotiabank Place.
Detroit scored twice in the third period to knot the game at 2-2. However, Ottawa took the lead on Alfredsson's 28th goal of the year.
Nicklas Lidstrom was called for holding with 3:25 to play and Ottawa used the power play to take the lead. Joe Corvo blasted a shot from the right boards that hit a body in front, but the puck went back to the right circle and Alfredsson smacked the loose puck into the net for a 3-2 lead with 2:56 to play.
Ottawa then kept Detroit from mounting any pressure to hold on for the win.
Mike Fisher had a goal and an assist while Ray Emery made 27 saves in the win for the Senators, who have won four straight.
"I felt good today," said Alfredsson. "I was able to get to the puck a lot and I felt comfortable with it as well and I opened up some good chances. It was fun to play."
Brian Rafalski and Jiri Hudler each had a goal while Dominik Hasek made 29 saves for the Red Wings, who have dropped their last two games.
"I didn't think we were as good as they were in the first two periods," said Detroit coach Mike Babcock. "I thought they were quicker and won more battles. Their execution was at its highest level. You have got to give them credit because there are two parts to the equation: there's their part and there's your part. They had a good start and they were coming at us. We got a little rattled when they scored right away. We didn't get the puck out on the penalty kill and seeing that puck right in the net... I thought it took us a while to get a little composed."
Detroit leads the Western Conference and the league with 70 points while Ottawa leads the Eastern Conference with 62 points.
Trailing, 2-0, entering the third period, the Red Wings lit the lamp twice in the frame.
The first goal came at the 7:46 mark of the frame. During a scrum along the right boards, Pavel Datsyuk kicked the puck out to Henrik Zetterberg, who immediately gave the puck to Rafalski at the right point. Rafalski took a stride in on net and snapped a wrister into the right corner.
Detroit then tied the game on a goal from Hudler. Lidstrom blasted a shot from the high point that missed the net, but it bounced off the back boards right to Hudler, who fired it past Emery with 7:54 to play.
The Senators jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:09 into the game as Alfredsson took a feed from Dany Heatley in the high slot and one-timed the puck through traffic and past Hasek.
Emery made 11 saves in the opening frame to keep Detroit off the board.
Ottawa made it a 2-0 game 3:26 into the second period. Luke Richardson picked off a pass in the neutral zone and sprung Fisher with a lead pass. Fisher skated unopposed into the Detroit end and snapped a wrist shot over the glove of Hasek.
Emery continued to stymie Detroit in the second period and stopped all nine shots he faced.
