Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Marek Svatos scored two goals in the third period, as the Colorado Avalanche continued their dominance over the Carolina Hurricanes with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory at the RBC Center.

The Avalanche haven't suffered a loss to the Carolina/Hartford franchise since February 9, 1996 at McNichols Sports Arena when the Whalers registered a 3-2 decision in overtime, a span of 15 games (12 wins and three ties).

Paul Stastny snapped a four-game pointless streak with a goal and an assist for Colorado, which halted a two-game slide. Cody McLeod also posted a goal and an assist and Tyler Arnason collected two helpers, while Jose Theodore finished the game with 30 saves.

"Well, we were scrappy around the net," said Colorado coach Joel Quenneville. "We had more tenacity in that area. We scored those ugly goals."

Keith Aucoin recorded a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, who have dropped two straight. Erik Cole, Chad LaRose and Cory Stillman also scored, while Cam Ward allowed five on 29 shots in defeat.

"I thought we worked," said Carolina coach Peter Laviolette. "We came out slow in the first five, I thought. Picked it up after that. We did the right things, we just made mistakes at the end that cost us."

Colorado scored three goals in the third period to erase a 4-2 deficit and pulled ahead.

A wraparound attempt was stopped by Ward, but McLeod continued to bang away at the right side of the crease and the puck eventually crossed the goal line at 10:23.

Then the heroics of Svatos took over. With 6:10 remaining, Svatos fired a shot from the slot just inside the far post, tying the game.

The Avalanche completed the rally and grabbed their first lead of the game with 4:03 left in regulation. Arnason's shot glanced off the catching glove of Ward and Svatos, driving to the net, knocked in the rebound behind the sprawled netminder.

In the final minute, Carolina pulled Ward in favor of an extra attacker, but the Hurricanes couldn't force overtime.

Colorado dictated the play early on, outshooting Carolina 11-1, but the Hurricanes grabbed a 1-0 lead on their second shot of the contest. Sergei Samsonov bounced the puck off the far boards and Cole, who used his speed to skate around an Avalanche defender, corralled the disc at the right circle. Cole then drove hard to the net and slipped the puck past the left pad of Theodore at the 8:45 mark of the first. Theodore got caught backpedaling because of Cole's impressive speed.

Aucoin made it a 2-0 game with 1:59 to play in the first period when his shot from the top of the right circle beat Theodore on the glove side.

Milan Hejduk lit the lamp 50 seconds into the middle frame to cut the deficit in half. Andrew Brunette spun out from behind the Hurricanes' net and sent a great pass to Hejduk for an easy tap-in.

LaRose pounced on a rebound at 3:43, giving the Hurricanes a 3-1 lead. Theodore got a piece of Aucoin's offering from the left circle, but the puck trickled through his pads and sat in the crease, where LaRose tucked it home.

Colorado drew back within one on Stastny's 16th goal of the season just past the midway point of the second. It was Stastny's first marker since December 17th.

Stillman's power-play tally gave Carolina its third two-goal lead of the game, 4-2, with 6:21 remaining. With one second left on the man-advantage, Stillman ripped a slap shot from the top of the right circle past the blocker of Theodore.
