NHL Game Summary - St. Louis at Columbus

Final Score: St. Louis 4 - Columbus 6

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Nikolai Zherdev scored a pair of third period goals as the Columbus Blue Jackets downed the St. Louis Blues, 6-4, at Nationwide Arena.

Jason Chimera and Dan Fritsche each had a goal and an assist while Adam Foote and David Vyborny each had three helpers for the Blue Jackets, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Pascal Leclaire made 26 saves in the win.

"It was important for us to make sure that we came out strong," said Foote. "They really played well in their system, played with energy and were patient. We knew we really had to stick to our game plan because they would be disciplined with theirs."

David Backes and Andy McDonald each had a goal and an assist while Hannu Toivonen gave up six goals on 37 shots for the Blues, who had a three-game winning streak stopped.

Columbus held a 3-1 lead at one point in the game, but St. Louis scored late in the second period and early in the third to tie it.

However, the Blue Jackets rallied and scored a pair of goals separated by 1:18 to take control of the game.

Zherdev gave his team a 4-3 lead on his own as he skated through the neutral zone into the St. Louis end, got past a defender and flicked a bouncing shot on net that went between the pads of Toivonen with 5:57 to play.

A bit later, Fritsche gave his team some insurance as his wrister from the left circle again beat Toivonen between the pads.

Zherdev sealed the win with a power-play goal as Vyborny sprung Zherdev with an outlet pass and Zherdev went to the backhand and lifted the puck into the left corner of the net for a 6-3 lead with 1:57 to play.

Jay McClement scored thanks to a Columbus defensive miscue with 38 seconds to play to cap the scoring.

St. Louis got the first goal of the contest a bit less than eight minutes into the first period. Ryan Johnson flicked a pass from the left circle to the slot where the puck hit off the left skate of Backes and went into the net. The goal was reviewed to see if Backes kicked it in, but the on-ice call was upheld.

Columbus, though, scored the next three goals to assume a 3-1 lead.

Rick Nash tied the game at the 12:08 mark of the first period as his quick wrist shot on the fly from the left circle went over the glove of Toivonen.

On a 5-on-3 power play, the Blue Jackets took the lead as Ron Hainsey's slap shot from the high slot beat Toivonen at the low glove side with 2:39 left in the first.

In the second period, Columbus padded its lead as Chimera's wraparound from the right side deflected off the skate of a St. Louis player in front and snuck past Toivonen at the 7:57 mark.

St. Louis, though, cut its deficit with a power play goal as Brad Boyes' slap shot at the left circle went over the left shoulder of Leclaire with 2:01 left in the stanza.

The Blues tied the game 3:33 into the third period as McDonald grabbed a loose puck in the slot and squeaked a shot past Leclaire for his eighth goal of the season.
