Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Richard Park scored the game-winner in the shootout as the New York Islanders downed the Calgary Flames, 5-4, at Pengrowth Saddledome.
Each team scored in the first round of the shootout and Rick DiPietro made a stick save on a low shot from Jarome Iginla.
Park then skated in on net and slid a forehand under the left pad of Miikka Kiprusoff before DiPietro made a pad save on Owen Nolan's wrister to preserve the win.
Ruslan Fedotenko and Trent Hunter each had a goal and two assists while Mike Sillinger scored twice for the Islanders, who snapped a four-game losing streak. DiPietro made 38 saves in the win.
Nolan scored twice while Kiprusoff finished the game with 21 saves for the Flames, who have dropped two straight after a five-game winning streak.
The Isles got on the board first as Sillinger was sprung on a breakaway and snapped a wrister between the pads of Kiprusoff 8:18 into the first period.
Calgary tied the game at the 15:42 mark of the first as Nolan's slapper from the left circle went over the glove of DiPietro.
New York, though, scored the next two goals to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
Just 17 seconds after Calgary tied the game, Hunter's seventh goal of the season gave the Isles the lead back and 1:09 later Fedotenko sent a backhand pass from the right boards to the slot where Sillinger, who was wide open, snapped a wrister into the right corner of the net.
The Flames scored three straight goals in the second period to regain the lead.
Just 1:01 in, Alex Tanguay sent a pass from the right boards to the front of the net where Nolan tapped it in for his second goal of the game.
Just 57 seconds later, Dion Phaneuf cranked a shot from the right point that Craig Conroy tipped past DiPietro for his sixth goal of the season.
The Flames then took a 4-3 lead with 3:28 left in the second period as Dustin Boyd jammed in a loose puck in front of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
"I didn't think we were getting outplayed," Sillinger said. "They've got a good team. We scored three goals in the first period. It was a good start for us, but Calgary did a good job at coming back."
The lead was short-lived, though, as New York tied the contest with 2:05 left in the second as Marc-Andre Bergeron slapped a shot from the right point that Fedotenko tipped past Kiprusoff for his eighth goal of the season.
Neither team was able to score in the third period or overtime to force the shootout.
"We were really pushing forward. It would have been nice to come through, but we didn't," Iginla said.
