NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Carolina

Final Score: New Jersey 4 - Carolina 1

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Travis Zajac had a goal and an assist and Martin Brodeur made 20 saves, as the New Jersey Devils outlasted the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-1, at RBC Center.

Patrik Elias, Brian Gionta and Sergei Brylin also scored for the Devils, who have won two straight and four of five. Jamie Langenbrunner and Zach Parise each had two assists for New Jersey, which has won six of seven against the Hurricanes.

Keith Aucoin scored the lone goal, the first of his career, for Carolina, which continues to struggle on the offensive end. The Hurricanes fell to 1-2 in their last three games, totaling just two goals over that span.

Cam Ward made 20 saves for the Hurricanes, who have lost five of their last seven games.

The Devils got going 12:24 into the first period on the power play. From the right-side boards, Langenbrunner slid the puck towards the crease, forcing Ward to make a kick save. However, Zajac was crashing the net and put home the rebound.

Carolina tied the game just 2:41 into the second when Aucoin scored the first goal of his career. After Dennis Seidenberg's shot from the right point was stopped by Brodeur, the rebound went right to Aucoin as he was crashing the net and he batted it home.

Aucoin was playing only because the flu bug hit the Hurricanes hard. Glen Wesley, Ray Whitney, Trevor Letowski and Wade Brookbank were all scratched because of illness. Aucoin and Brandon Nolan were called up as a result.

"The injuries and sicknesses had absolutely nothing to do with tonight," said Carolina head coach Peter Laviolette. "We lost the game on the ice, not with guys home in bed. Every team goes through it, with that comes an opportunity for others to step up and we clearly did not."

New Jersey, though, answered before the second intermission.

Elias broke into the zone along the left boards, took a short pass from Langenbrunner and, from the circle, blasted a slap shot past the glove side of Ward.

"Our resiliency tonight was good," said New Jersey head coach Brent Sutter. "I guess that's mental toughness. We talked about wanting to play 60 minutes and getting consistency in our game. When individuals have consistency, the team has consistency. When you get 20 guys doing that, that's huge."

The third period was all New Jersey as well. Gionta scored a power play goal with 7:06 left and with 1:52 remaining Brylin made it a three-goal game.
