Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Dominik Hasek stopped all 19 shots he faced, as the Detroit Red Wings celebrated Chris Chelios' milestone with a 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche at Joe Louis Arena.
Chelios became the second-oldest player in National Hockey League history to play in a game at 45 years, 348 days, passing Moe Roberts.
"I don't know if it's something that you celebrate, but after talking about it for so long and seeing how proud my family is of the accomplishment, it is a pretty good feeling," Chelios said.
Only Gordie Howe (52 years, 6 days) has trumped that feat.
"If I get to that point, I'll stop one year short of that," Chelios said. "I'm the oldest American-born NHLer and that's enough for me.
Hasek is the next oldest current player in the NHL but is also not showing his age, posting his second shutout in as many outings.
Pavel Datsyuk scored the lone goal while Tomas Holmstrom and Niklas Kronvall had the assists for the Red Wings, who have won four in a row and eight of nine. Holmstrom returned after an eight-game absence because of a knee injury. Teammate Kirk Maltby was back on the ice as well following a 19-game layoff with a back injury.
Jose Theodore turned away 24 shots for Colorado, which has dropped five of six.
"Detroit is obviously the best team in the league right now. They play hard and they play so well defensively," Jose Theodore said.
The first period was highlighted by a loud ovation when Chelios stepped into the faceoff circle early in the stanza, the longtime defenseman recognizing the crowd before the referee dropped the puck.
The scoring, though, did not start until late in the second. The sequence was set up by Kronvall's slapshot from the point, which hit off Holmstrom in front. Holmstrom corralled the loose disc and blindly sent it across the crease, where Datsyuk punched it in for the 1-0 Detroit lead.
The Avs put forth a flurry late in the contest, and had their best chance when Andrew Brunette got loose in front in the final minute.
Hasek turned away that try, however, and held on for his 79th career shutout.
