Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Marek Svatos scored the game-winning goal with 2:55 left in overtime, as the Colorado Avalanche edged the New York Islanders, 2-1, at the Pepsi Center.
In overtime, Svatos lifted a backhander over the glove of Rick DiPietro to give the Avalanche their first victory over the Islanders since November 16, 2001.
Jordan Leopold also scored and Jose Theodore made 23 saves for the Avalanche, who snapped a season-high four-game losing streak. Theodore recorded his first win since a 9-5 triumph over the St. Louis Blues on December 9th.
"Tonight was really good for our confidence," said Theodore. "We now have to bring more energy into Detroit. They (Islanders) were lucky to be tied after two. We did not panic."
Tim Jackman lit the lamp and Rick DiPietro allowed two goals on 39 shots for New York, which has dropped two straight, both in overtime.
"We gave them a lot of room in their end and they made the most of it," said New York captain Bill Guerin. "We want to do more than just try to hang on to a one-goal lead. We did not generate any offensive chances. We were just chasing the puck all night."
Despite outshooting New York 15-4 in the opening period, Colorado found itself trailing 1-0.
The Avalanche got caught in a line change, and Jackman, walking in from the right circle, fired a perfect shot over the glove of Theodore at 3:18. It was Jackman's first goal since February 27, 2004 at Chicago, while he was a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets -- and only the second of his career.
Colorado finally solved DiPietro with 32 seconds remaining in the middle frame when the puck ricocheted off Leopold, who was standing at the left side of the cage.
With 1:10 remaining in regulation, Colorado's Ian Laperriere was assessed a minor penalty for high-sticking, but New York failed to score on the power play.
