Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Mikael Tellqvist was solid with 25 saves and Radim Vrbata recorded a goal and an assist, as the Phoenix Coyotes captured their third consecutive victory with a 4-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Martin Hanzal and Craig Weller also scored for Phoenix, which improved to 7-2-1 in its last 10 games overall. Fredrik Sjostrom added an empty-net goal in the win.
Cam Barker and Kris Versteeg scored for the Blackhawks, who are winless in their last three games (0-2-1) following a four-game win streak. Chicago will conclude its current three-game road trip against Anaheim on Friday.
Nikolai Khabibulin allowed three goals on 22 shots in the loss.
Phoenix opened the scoring 6:14 into the first period, mostly due to a mistake by Khabibulin. Following a slap shot from the right point by Derek Morris, the puck sat in the crease area near the left post. Hanzal's rebound attempt was again saved by Khabibulin, but he accidentally pushed the puck over the goal line with his glove while trying to scoop it up.
With 3:51 remaining in the opening stanza, the Coyotes built a 2-0 lead after Weller scored his second goal of the season. Daniel Winnik carried the puck down the right-wing side and continued along the rear boards. It appeared Winnik was headed to the other side, but he stopped quickly behind the net and feathered a pass to the goal mouth for a successful one-timer stuffer at the right post by Weller.
During a 5-on-3 advantage in the third period, Vrabata's 18th goal of the season gave the hosts a three-goal advantage when his wrister from beneath the left circle beat Khabibulin at the 7:44 mark.
The visitors made it interesting by scoring the next two goals, but it was not enough. The first was a high blazing wrist shot by Barker that flew past Tellqvist from inside the lower left circle with 8:29 to go in regulation.
Versteeg's first career goal at 18:33 brought Chicago within one, but the empty-netter by Sjostrom inside the final minute sealed the win.
