NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Ottawa

Final Score: NY Rangers 5 - Ottawa 2

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Brendan Shanahan scored a pair of goals and Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves, as the New York Rangers dealt the struggling Ottawa Senators a 5-2 loss.

Daniel Girardi, Jaromir Jagr and Blair Betts also scored for the Rangers, who tagged Senators netminder Martin Gerber for three first period goals. The Rangers ended a five-game losing streak to Ottawa, having been shutout in their previous two contests.

Joe Corvo and Dany Heatley each scored for the Senators, who started the season with an impressive 15-2-0 record but are currently mired in a six-game losing streak.

"There's no doubt about it, it's frustrating," said Gerber. "Nobody's happy right now. But everyone has to find a way to push through and get out of it. I can only speak for my part, and I have to do a better job. I have to find a way to get my game back and try to help the team."

New York quickly seized control of the game on Girardi's goal 3:37 into the first period. Marcel Hossa won the puck behind the Senators' net and then sent a pass to the right point for Girardi, who rifled a one-timer past Gerber.

Just under four minutes later, the Rangers made it 2-0 on a similar goal, as Scott Gomez set up Shanahan with a one-timer at the right circle for his first tally of the game.

Then, with Ottawa down a man, Jagr skated his way through the Senators defense before firing a shot top shelf on Gerber to make it 3-0.

Ray Emery took over for Gerber to start the second period, but the Rangers answered with Shanahan's second goal of the game -- a power play tally off a redirection.

Corvo stopped the bleeding when his wrister beat Lundqvist with 5:32 left before the second intermission. Heatley's 14th goal of the season at the 14:02 mark brought Ottawa within 4-2, but Betts' empty net goal with 42 seconds left iced the game.

"We've been playing like this a lot this year," said Lundqvist. "All the guys are on the same page and working for each other. Tonight was a great example. We didn't let them back in it. We stayed focussed. We knew it was going to be a tough game, but the start was big for us."
