(Sports Network) - The Dallas Stars will get another chance to wrap up their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series tonight, when they welcome the second-seeded San Jose Sharks for Game 6 at American Airlines Center.
The fifth-seeded Stars led this series three games to none, but the Sharks have rattled off back-to-back wins to cut their deficit to 3-2.
After posting a 2-1 decision in Game 4 at Dallas, the Sharks went home and notched an overtime victory on Friday.
Joe Pavelski tallied 1:05 into OT as San Jose overcame a late two-goal deficit to top Dallas, 3-2, in Game 5 of their Western Conference semifinal from HP Pavilion.
Only two teams in NHL history have come back from an 0-3 deficit to win a playoff series and the last time it happened was in 1975 when the New York Islanders pulled it off in the quarterfinals against Pittsburgh. Toronto also did it against Detroit in the 1942 Stanley Cup finals.
The Sharks have never even won a series when falling behind two games to none.
Although they've never dropped a series when up 3-0, the Stars franchise has lost a set when holding a 3-1 lead. In 1992, the Minnesota North Stars fell in seven games to Detroit in the opening round in what was last playoff series for the North Stars before relocating to Dallas for the 1993-94 campaign.
Game 7 of this series is scheduled for Tuesday night in San Jose.
Dallas entered the third period of Friday's game with a 2-0 lead, but San Jose scored twice to send the game into overtime. Milan Michalek and Brian Campbell posted the goals in the final period of regulation to set up Pavelski's OT heroics.
After a failed clear inside the Stars' zone, Pavelski picked up the puck along the left wing side halfway up the boards. He skated in, curled around to the right circle, and lifted a wrist shot over Marty Turco's shoulder.
Evgeni Nabokov made 24 saves to earn his sixth win of the postseason. Nabokov, who is a finalist for this year's Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender, gave up seven goals in the first two games of this series, but has yielded just five over the last three tests.
Jere Lehtinen and Brenden Morrow lit the lamp for the Stars, while Turco allowed three goals on 22 shots in defeat.
Stars centerman Stu Barnes missed his second straight game with concussion- like symptoms and is questionable for tonight's test. Barnes suffered the injury after a collision with San Jose's Jonathan Cheechoo in Game 3. The veteran has two goals and an assist in this year's postseason.
The Stars finished in third place in the Pacific -- 11 points behind the division champion Sharks and five in back of second-place Anaheim. Dallas disposed of the Ducks in six games during the opening round and is still just one win away from ousting San Jose.
Meanwhile, the Sharks have averaged nearly 105 points during the last three regular seasons and notched a franchise-record 108 points this year. However, that success has not translated to the playoffs recently, as San Jose came into this postseason on the heels of back-to-back second-round exits.
This year was supposed to be different, as the Sharks were the NHL's hottest team in the second half of the season, posting an 18-0-2 stretch at one point.
The regular-season series between Dallas and San Jose was extremely close with each team winning four games. Dallas has won both of its playoff meetings with the Sharks, with the most recent victory coming in five games during the 2000 conference semifinals.
Dallas was 23-16-2 as the hosts this year, while the Sharks were the NHL's best road team during the regular season, going 27-10-4 as the visitor. San Jose was 3-1 at Dallas this season.
