(Sports Network) - After earning a split in Montreal, the Philadelphia Flyers will try to take a two games to one lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals when they host the top-seeded Canadiens tonight in Game 3 at the Wachovia Center.
The Flyers dropped a 4-3 overtime decision in Game 1, but rebounded with a 4-2 triumph in Saturday's meeting at the Bell Centre. This best-of-seven set will remain in the City of Brotherly Love for Game 4, which is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
R.J. Umberger scored twice as Philadelphia evened the series with Saturday's decision in Montreal. Danny Briere scored the game-winner while Jeff Carter also lit the lamp for the sixth-seeded Flyers.
Briere is having a superb postseason, as he leads all players with 12 points and is tied with Detroit's Johan Franzen for the most goals in the playoffs with seven.
Martin Biron was again sharp in net as he gave up just two goals on 36 shots and made several big saves throughout the game.
Biron was the Flyers' best player in Game 2 and especially shined in the closing minutes of the second period to help Philly take a 3-1 lead into the third period.
Shortly after Briere's goal made it a two-goal game, Tomas Plekanec picked off a pass and skated down the other end of the ice on a clean breakaway. From down low he made the move to the backhand, but Biron swallowed the shot up with his glove.
Montreal was then issued a power play when Scott Hartnell was called for roughing with 2:04 left in the second. Biron made several big stops during the man advantage, but he made his best save towards the end as he again used the glove on a shot by Plekanec in what appeared to be a slam dunk.
Saku Koivu had a goal and an assist while Andrei Markov also lit the lamp for the Canadiens. Carey Price was banged up for four goals on 23 shots in the loss.
Both the Flyers and Canadiens are coming off seven-game series, as Montreal defeated Boston in a Game 7 last Monday night and Philly notched an OT victory in the decisive test in Washington the following day.
Montreal is in the second round for the first time since 2004, when it lost to Tampa Bay in the conference semifinals. The Flyers also were last in the second round that season as they made it to the East finals before losing to the Lightning.
The Canadiens were a perfect 4-0 against Philadelphia during the regular season and outscored the Flyers by a 15-6 margin over that span. However, Montreal was 8-0 against the Bruins this year and wound up going the distance with Boston in the first round.
Montreal is 3-1 all-time in playoff series against the Flyers, including a win in the 1976 Stanley Cup finals. The last postseason encounter between the teams came in 1989, when the Habs defeated Philly in the Wales Conference finals.
The Flyers had an average 21-14-6 record at home this year, while the Habs posted a solid 25-12-4 mark as the visitors.
On the injury front, the Flyers are hoping to get winger Mike Knuble back on the ice soon. Knuble, who suffered a torn hamstring in Game 5 against Washington, skated on Sunday and is questionable for tonight's contest, although a return for Game 4 on Wednesday in more likely. The veteran had two goals and three assists against the Capitals and had 29 goals and 55 points during the regular season.
