(Sports Network) - The top-seeded Montreal Canadiens will try to rebound from an overtime loss, as they visit the Boston Bruins at TD Banknorth Garden for Game 4 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
The Canadiens, champions of the Northeast Division, posted a 4-1 victory in the series' opener and notched a 3-2 overtime victory in Game 2 on Saturday.
However, Boston was able to return the favor Sunday on its home ice by picking up an overtime win. Marc Savard's first career playoff goal at the 9:25 mark of OT lifted the Bruins to a 2-1 triumph and cut their deficit in the series to 2-1.
A long ricochet resulted in a Boston rush that forced Montreal to scramble back into defensive position about midway through the extra session. A penalty was called, but play went on, and the Bruins were working the puck around the left circle.
However, almost unnoticed was Savard coming in from the right point, and Dennis Wideman dished a backhand pass that Savard blasted into the open net. Montreal goaltender Carey Price was concentrating on the movement in the left circle, and was out of position to make the save.
Milan Lucic scored the other goal for Boston, which not only avoided falling further behind in the best-of-seven series, but snapped a 13-game losing streak against Montreal.
Tim Thomas stopped all six shots he faced in the extra session, and turned aside 27 overall for the Bruins.
Tom Kostopoulos had Montreal's lone tally, and the 20-year-old rookie Price was solid in net, making 29 saves.
Prior to scoring the first goal of Game 3, the Bruins had never held a lead at any point in the series.
Montreal struggled once again on the power play as it went 0-for-4 with the extra man. The Habs are just 1-for-17 on the man advantage in this series after having the NHL's best power-play unit in the regular season, scoring on 24.1-percent of their opportunities.
On the injury front, Boston should not count on the return of centerman Patrice Bergeron in this series. Bergeron has been out since suffering a concussion in late October and was originally thought to be eyeing a comeback for this series. However, he was not cleared for game action after a Sunday meeting with neurologist Robert Cantu as well as the team physician.
Bergeron, who finished second on the Bruins with 70 points in 2006-07, is scheduled to have a follow-up appointment with Cantu next week.
The Canadiens dominated the season series with the Bruins this year, as they won all eight meetings and outscored their Northeast Division rivals by a 39-16 margin. Despite the Game 3 victory, Boston has still dropped 13 of 14 and 20 of its last 24 tests against the Habs.
Montreal also holds a sizeable advantage in terms of all-time playoff meetings between the clubs. Montreal has taken 23 of the 30 postseason series between these old rivals and has also won the last two, beating the Bruins in the conference quarters in 2002 and 2004.
Boston was 21-16-4 as the hosts this season, while the Canadiens were an impressive 25-12-4 as the road team.
Following tonight's test, the series will head back to Montreal on Thursday for Game 5 at the Bell Centre.
