(Sports Network) - The Dallas Stars will try to take a commanding three games to none lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinals tonight, when they host the Anaheim Ducks at American Airlines Center.
The Ducks are the defending Stanley Cup champions, but will have to climb out of a two-game hole if they want to get out of the opening round this season.
Anaheim is the fourth seed in the West and had home-ice advantage in this matchup before squandering it away in Games 1 and 2. The Stars opened the series with a shocking 4-0 win at the Honda Center on Thursday and followed it up with Saturday's 5-2 decision.
The series now shifts to Dallas for Games 3 and 4 at American Airlines Center, where the Stars were a solid 23-16-2 this season. The Ducks struggled on the road during the regular season, going 19-18-4 away from Orange County.
Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday in Dallas.
Mike Modano was credited with the game-winning goal for the Stars in Game 2. Dallas had led 2-0 early in the second only to cough up that edge later in the period. However, the Stars scored three unanswered tallies in the third, beginning with Modano's goal at 5:47 of the final period.
Mike Ribeiro had a goal and two assists while Brad Richards and Loui Eriksson each tallied a goal and an assist for the Stars.
Marty Turco made 20 saves in the win and has stopped 43-of-45 shots thrown his way in this series.
Teemu Selanne and Travis Moen each scored a goal while Jean-Sebastien Giguere was lit up for five goals on 30 shots for the Ducks.
The Ducks became the first-ever West Coast team to win a Stanley Cup championship last year, as they defeated Ottawa in five games to also earn the first league crown in franchise history.
Anaheim is trying to become the first team to win back-to-back Stanley Cup championships since Detroit did it in 1997 and '98.
Dallas, meanwhile, is attempting to get past the opening round in the postseason for the first time since 2003, when it lost in the conference semifinals to Anaheim. The Stars have been bounced out in the quarters in three straight playoff trips.
The Stars won the first two games despite playing without defensive leader Sergei Zubov, who hasn't taken the ice since January 17 due to foot and groin injuries. Zubov had surgery last week to heal a sports hernia injury and didn't travel with the team to Anaheim. Dallas still hasn't set a timetable for Zubov's return.
