(Sports Network) - Anaheim saw its Stanley Cup title defense get off to a rocky start in Game 1 of the Western Conference quarterfinals, but the Ducks will try to get back on track tonight when they welcome the Dallas Stars to the Honda Center for the second matchup in this best-of-seven series.
The fifth-seeded Stars pulled off a surprising victory in the series opener Thursday, as they notched a 4-0 decision in Anaheim. Marty Turco stopped all 23 shots he faced for the fourth shutout of his playoff career and four different Dallas players scored on the power play in the win.
Brenden Morrow registered a goal and two assists while Jere Lehtinen, Steve Ott and Loui Eriksson also scored for Dallas, which finished 4-for-7 on the power play and thoroughly dominated the game in all facets.
Mike Ribeiro and Stephane Robidas both posted two assists in the win.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere allowed four goals on 37 shots for the Ducks, who did not fare well in their first playoff game since they won the Stanley Cup on the Honda Center ice 10 months ago.
The fourth-seeded Ducks became the first-ever West Coast team to win a Stanley Cup championship last year, as they defeated Ottawa in five games to also earn the first league crown in franchise history.
Anaheim is now trying to become the first team to win back-to-back Stanley Cup championships since Detroit did it in 1997 and '98.
Dallas, meanwhile, is trying to get past the opening round in the postseason for the first time since 2003, when it lost in the conference semifinals to Anaheim. The Stars have been bounced out in the quarters in three straight playoff trips.
The Stars won Game 1 despite playing without defensive leader Sergei Zubov, who hasn't taken the ice since January 17 due to foot and groin injuries. Zubov had surgery last week to heal a sports hernia injury and didn't travel with the team to Anaheim. The 37-year-old Russian has 14 goals and 52 assists in 103 career playoff games and is a minutes-eater at the back end when healthy.
Dallas would have loved to have claimed home-ice advantage for this series, seeing as Anaheim went 28-9-4 at the Honda Center this year. However, the Stars were just as good on the road this year (22-14-5) as they were in Big D (23-16-2).
The Stars even split two games in Anaheim this year while taking three of four as the host in the eight-game series. The Ducks have faced Dallas just once in the playoffs, posting the 4-2 series' win in 2003.
After tonight's test, the series will shift to Dallas for Games 3 and 4. The Stars will host the third game Tuesday night at American Airlines Center.
