(Sports Network) - The New York Rangers will play their first game since clinching a playoff berth tonight, as they host the rival New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden in the finale of a home-and-home series.
The Rangers secured a spot in the postseason Thursday evening, as they notched a shutout victory over the Islanders.
New York is currently fifth in the Eastern Conference standings with 95 points and two games to play in the regular season. The Rangers could still catch New Jersey for the fourth seed, as the Devils, who play in Philadelphia tonight, are two points ahead with two games left as well. New York would not win a tiebreaker against the Devils, as a result of their higher win total.
The Blueshirts are also just one point ahead of sixth-seeded Ottawa, but the Senators are playing their final game of the regular season tonight against visiting Boston.
The Islanders, meanwhile, have been eliminated from the postseason race, but still have a chance to win the season series against the Rangers.
The Rangers won their second straight contest in the series on Thursday, but the Isles still hold a 4-3 edge this season. The Islanders have also won two of three and six of their last eight at the Garden.
The Blueshirts notched a 3-0 victory at Nassau Coliseum, as Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves for his league-leading 10th shutout of the season.
Jaromir Jagr scored twice while Martin Straka had a goal and an assist for the Rangers, who have won two straight and three of their last four games.
Jagr has notched five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in his last three games. The 36-year-old Czech superstar has 68 points this year and is trying to reach 70 points for the 15th consecutive season. Jagr last failed to reach the 70-point mark as a member of the Penguins in 1991-92, his second season in the league.
Wade Dubielewicz stopped 32 shots in the loss for the Islanders, who have dropped their past four games.
Tonight marks the final contest of the season for the Isles, who are just 16-20-4 as the visiting club this year.
The Rangers are 25-13-2 as the host this year and are playing their final home test of the regular season tonight. The Blueshirts will close out their schedule Sunday in New Jersey, which may very well be the Rangers' opponent in the opening round of the playoffs.
