(Sports Network) - Strong play down the stretch has Nashville's playoff destiny in its own hands. The Predators will aim to strengthen their hold on the eighth seed in the West tonight in the conclusion of a home-and-home set with the St. Louis Blues at the Sommet Center.
Nashville has won four of its last five games to jump past Vancouver in the standings. The Predators' 89 points are one better than the Canucks, and both teams have two games left on the schedule. Vancouver hosts Edmonton tonight.
However, a victory for Nashville coupled with a loss by Vancouver tonight would wrap up a playoff spot for the Predators.
St. Louis and Nashville opened this home-and-home series on Tuesday, with the Preds posting a 4-3 overtime victory. Rich Peverley scored the game-winning goal 1:43 into the extra session after taking a pass from Jan Hlavac in the slot and firing past Hannu Toivonen.
Jordin Tootoo and Brandon Bochenski each had a goal and an assist for the Predators, Vernon Fiddler also scored and Peverley added an assist.
Dan Ellis, who entered the game having allowed just one goal in more than 233 minutes, was pulled after allowing three goals on seven shots. Chris Mason stopped all 10 shots he faced the rest of the way and earned the win.
Nashville will play its final home game of the season tonight, and is 22-14-4 as the host. The Preds have won two straight after dropping six in a row at the Sommet Center and will end the season on the road Friday in Chicago.
David Perron had a goal and an assist for the Blues, losers of five of six. Andy McDonald and Jamal Mayers also scored, while Toivonen made 14 saves in relief of Manny Legace, who stopped all eight shots he faced in the first period.
Legace left the game due to a hip flexor and is doubtful for tonight. Toivonen is 1-1-1 with a 3.76 goals-against average in four lifetime games (2 starts) versus Nashville.
The Blues have dropped 12 of their last 14 on the road, and are 12-20-7 away from St. Louis this season. The club begins a home-and-home set with Columbus on Saturday in St. Louis to conclude the season.
After losing their first three games of the season against the Blues, the Predators have won the last four in the series that concludes tonight. Nashville has won 19 of its last 23 versus St. Louis and 10 of 11 as the host.
