(Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings quest for yet another Presidents' Trophy gets a little easier this week, as they begin a home-and-home set with the St. Louis Blues tonight at Scottrade Center.
These two clubs will square off in Detroit on Friday.
With six games left on their regular-season schedule, the Red Wings and their 106 points lead the San Jose Sharks by seven points for the best mark in the West and the NHL. Detroit has played one more game than the Sharks, who play in Phoenix tonight.
Detroit has already won the Central Division for the seventh consecutive season and is aiming for its third Presidents' Trophy in four seasons. Buffalo took home the honor as the team with the best record in the league last year after the Red Wings captured it for two consecutive seasons.
The Red Wings reached 50 wins on Saturday with a 4-1 win over Columbus. It marked Detroit's third consecutive 50-win season, making it only the fourth time in NHL history a team has gone three straight years with 50 wins. Montreal was the last team to do so, going on its run from 1975-76 through 78-79.
Also, Mike Babcock became the first coach in NHL history to post 50-win seasons in each of his first three years with a team.
Pavel Datsyuk registered a goal and two assists versus the Blue Jackets. Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen also scored for the Red Wings, who have won three straight. Brian Rafalski collected two assists and Dominik Hasek made 11 saves to earn his 386th career victory, surpassing Mike Vernon for sole possession of 10th place on the all-time list.
Datsyuk has three goals and four assists over his last four games, while Zetterberg has four goals and three helpers over that span as well.
Detroit wraps a three-game road trip tonight and is 24-11-4 as the visiting team this year.
St. Louis has dropped two straight and 14 of its last 16. With 72 points, the Blues have the second fewest points in the West and third fewest in the NHL. Both the Los Angeles Kings and the Tampa Bay Lightning have 66 points on the season.
The Blues, who will miss the postseason for a third straight season, did manage a point last time out after losing to Chicago, 4-3, in overtime on Sunday.
Lee Stempniak, D.J. King and Keith Tkachuk scored for the Blues, who wrapped a nine-game road swing just 1-6-2. Hannu Toivonen made 27 saves for St. Louis.
Toivonen may be in net again tonight, as Manny Legace is probable due to a lower body injury. Martin Rucinsky (sore back) and Jay McKee (sore foot) are both questionable.
St. Louis is 19-13-5 as the host this year.
Detroit and St. Louis have split six matchups so far this year, with the Red Wings losing two of three at the Scottrade Center. Overall, the Red Wings have won 11 of the past 18 meetings.
