(Sports Network) - A pair of clubs heading in the opposite direction will square off, as the rolling San Jose Sharks seek their 11th straight win tonight in a contest at HP Pavilion against the St. Louis Blues, who are aiming to avoid their fifth straight setback.
San Jose has come a long way since dropping its fifth straight game on February 20. Since then, the Sharks have won a franchise-record 10 straight, acquired defenseman Brian Campbell at the trade deadline and made up an 11- point deficit in the Pacific Division (as of February 29) to overtake the Dallas Stars for first place.
Evgeni Nabokov stopped 27 shots, as the Sharks defeated Nashville, 2-1, on Tuesday. Joe Pavelski and Milan Michalek each scored for the Sharks, who moved a point ahead of Dallas in the standings. San Jose has also played three fewer games than the Stars, who are off tonight.
The Sharks, who have surpassed their previous eight-game winning streak set from April 3-15, 2006, still trail Detroit by 10 points for the top mark in the Western Conference.
San Jose has won four of its last six at home and is 16-13-5 as the host club this season.
The Blues' last four losses have all come on their current nine-game road trip, a season long. However, the franchise did earn a point last time out, as it fell to Edmonton, 4-3, in overtime on Tuesday.
However, St. Louis has now dropped eight straight on the road and 10 of its last 11 overall. The Blues are 10-17-6 as the road team this year and still have trips to Anaheim, Montreal, Ottawa and Chicago left on the swing.
Brad Boyes has played well despite the recent losses. The Blues' leading goal scorer with 37 markers has lit the lamp five times over his last three games, and posted a goal and an assist on Tuesday.
Andy McDonald also scored and had a helper, Lee Stempniak tallied a goal and Manny Legace made 20 stops in a losing effort.
The Blues have fallen 11 points behind Vancouver for the eighth spot in the Western Conference with 12 games left to play.
St. Louis has also been dominated by the Sharks this season, losing all three tests to them by a 8-1 margin. Nabokov posted a shutout over the Blues on December 28, while Sharks backup Brian Boucher blanked St. Louis on March 1.
Boyes has St. Louis' lone goal against the Sharks this season.
San Jose has won four straight, eight of nine and 11 of its last 13 contests against St. Louis. The Blues have lost three of four and four of their last six in San Jose.
