(Sports Network) - The Colorado Avalanche will attempt to win their fifth straight game on home ice tonight, when they host the Edmonton Oilers at the Pepsi Center.
After winning two straight on the road to end February the Avs opened up March by going undefeated on a four-game homestand, claiming wins over Los Angeles, Vancouver, Anaheim and Dallas in Denver.
Colorado was then defeated by the Stars on the road to end a six-game winning streak, but the club rebounded quickly by posting a 5-2 victory in Atlanta. David Jones scored his first career goal and added two assists in his 16th NHL game.
Andrew Brunette had a pair of goals and Joe Sakic tallied and added two helpers for Colorado, which has won seven of eight. Milan Hejduk also scored and Jose Theodore made 22 stops in the win.
The Avs have 82 points are currently tied with Calgary for first in the Northeast Division. The teams are just one point ahead of Minnesota and two in front of fourth-place Vancouver.
Colorado is also sixth in the Western Conference playoff race, as Calgary holds the tiebreaker for the division lead due to playing less games than the Avs. The Flames are playing in Atlanta tonight.
Colorado is doing its best to stay in the hunt behind a rash of injuries, lead by Peter Forsberg and a groin ailment that has caused him to miss the last two games. The Swedish star is questionable for this evening's test as well.
Ryan Smyth has missed the five games due to a concussion and separated left shoulder, and is questionable for tonight's game along with Ruslan Salei (eye), Jordan Leopold (head) and Scott Parker (right ankle). Also, Adam Foote (sore hip) is doubtful for tonight.
Colorado is 22-11-2 at home this season and also host New Jersey on Saturday.
Edmonton, meanwhile, continues to thrive in extra playing time. The Oilers downed the St. Louis Blues, 4-3, in overtime on Tuesday to improve to 17-5 this year when a game goes into OT or a shootout.
Rookie Andrew Cogliano netted the overtime winner for the third straight game, as the Oilers blew a three-goal lead but salvaged a win over St. Louis.
Cogliano (16 goals, 22 assists) scored in the extra session on Sunday at Chicago and Friday at Columbus as well, propelling a three-game win streak. This is the first time in league history that a player has netted an overtime goal in three consecutive games.
Cogliano's three overtime game-winning goals also ties the NHL record for rookies in a season, matching Pittsburgh's Ryan Malone (2003-04) and Sidney Crosby (05-06).
Fellow rookie Sam Gagner made a sharp no-look pass to Cogliano on the game- winner and finished with a goal and two helpers himself for the Oilers. Mathieu Garon came up with 28 saves.
Zack Stortini and Jarret Stoll both scored as well in the victory, as Edmonton sits 11th in the Western Conference, seven points back of eighth- seeded Vancouver with 12 games left on its schedule.
Edmonton begins a three-game road trip tonight and is 14-16-4 as the visiting club this season.
Tonight is the sixth of eight meetings between Edmonton and Colorado this season. The Avs won the first four tests, one in a shootout, before the Oilers posted a 3-2 home win on February 24.
Colorado has won eight of 11 and 10 of the past 17 against Edmonton, though the Oilers have won four of their last seven in Denver.
