(Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames will continue their road trip tonight in Atlanta, where the Thrashers host an interconference matchup at Philips Arena.
The Flames opened the swing Wednesday night against Washington and were handed a close setback by the hosting Capitals. Alex Ovechkin scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 1:54 left in regulation, as Washington clipped Calgary, 3-2, at Verizon Center.
Jarome Iginla and Kristin Huselius scored for the Flames, who had won three of four coming into the contest. Miikka Kiprusoff allowed three goals on 34 shots in the loss.
Calgary comes into this evening's test tied for first in the Northwest Division with Colorado at 82 points apiece. Minnesota is just one point out of the division lead and Vancouver is in fourth place with 80 points. All four of the contenders for the Northwest crown are in action tonight.
The Flames are 18-10-9 as the visiting club this year and have win four of their last six tests on the road.
The Thrashers, meanwhile, have been in a downward spiral for nearly a month, as they've lost two straight and 10 of their last 11 games. The funk has dropped Atlanta to 14th out of 15 Eastern Conference teams and 11 points out of a playoff spot.
Atlanta was handed its most recent setback Tuesday against visiting Colorado, as David Jones scored his first career goal and added two assists to help the Avalanche post a 5-2 win at Philips Arena.
Colby Armstrong ended with a goal and an assist for the Thrashers and Erik Christensen also scored in the loss.
Atlanta goaltender Johan Hedberg yielded five goals on 23 shots over two periods before giving way to Kari Lehtonen, who stopped all six shots he faced.
The Thrashers, who are 17-16-3 as the host team this year, are playing the second of two straight home games tonight. Atlanta has dropped three of four and five of its last eight on home ice.
Calgary has won the last two meetings and three of its four most recent matchups against the Thrashers. However, the Flames, who haven't played in Atlanta since November 11, 2002, are 0-3 with a tie in four all-time stops at Philips Arena.
