(Sports Network) - A pair of teams on four-game losing streaks will try to get back on the winning track tonight, when the Tampa Bay Lightning welcome the Minnesota Wild to St. Pete Times Forum.
Minnesota's recent slide has been particularly harmful, as it has dropped the Wild out of first place in the Northwest Division. Calgary, which beat Minnesota on Sunday, leads the division by one point over the Wild.
The Wild lost their fourth in a row Tuesday night in Washington, as they were slammed, 4-1, by the Capitals. Brooks Laich scored twice and Olaf Kolzig made 34 saves to lift Washington to the easy win at the Verizon Center.
Branko Radivojevic tallied the only goal for Minnesota and Niklas Backstrom made 22 saves in a losing effort.
The Wild made one trade at the deadline on Tuesday, acquiring troubled forward Chris Simon from the New York Islanders for a sixth-round draft pick in June's draft. Simon has served multiple lengthy suspensions in recent seasons for out-of-control behavior on the ice.
Tonight marks the middle segment of a three-game road trip for the Wild, who are 16-13-2 as the visiting team this year.
The Lightning were very busy before the deadline, making a handful of trades and also re-signing a player on their roster.
In one of the biggest NHL deals at Tuesday's deadline, Tampa Bay, which is last in the Eastern Conference with 57 points, shipped centerman Brad Richards and goaltender Johan Holmqvist to the Stars for netminder Mike Smith as well as center Jeff Halpern, forward Jussi Jokinen and a 2009 fourth-round draft choice. Richards, a former Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP, has 18 goals and 51 points through 62 games this season.
The Richards' deal came just one night after the Lightning sent forward Vaclav Prospal to Philadelphia for defenseman Alexandre Picard and a conditional draft pick in 2009.
Also on Monday, the Lightning signed defenseman Dan Boyle to a six-year contract extension rather than trade him or allow the blueliner to become a free agent at the end of the season.
The Lightning wrapped up their deadline on Tuesday afternoon, dealing journeyman forward Jan Hlavac to the Nashville Predators for a seventh-round draft choice in the 2008 draft.
Smith is expected to start in goal for the Lightning tonight.
Tampa Bay was dealt its fourth straight loss Saturday against visiting Boston, as the Bruins defeated the Lightning, 5-3, behind a pair of goals from Glen Murray.
Michel Ouellet and Mathieu Darche scored goals as did Prospal in his last game for the Lightning. Holmqvist also had one final start in goal for Tampa, but surrendered five goals on 28 shots.
The Lightning, who are 15-15-2 as the host this year, are playing the middle test of a three-game homestand tonight. Tampa Bay has lost three of four and five of its last seven home games.
Tampa Bay has won two straight over the Wild, who are making their first stop at St. Pete Times Forum since losing a 3-2 decision on October 25, 2003.
