(Sports Network) - The Dallas Stars are closing in on the top spot in the Western Conference and will go for their third straight win when they take on the St. Louis Blues tonight at Scottrade Center.
The Stars won for the fourth time in five games with Saturday's 6-3 victory over Nashville and are just six points behind Detroit for the best record in the West.
Mike Ribeiro had two goals and two assists, Brenden Morrow scored and added three helpers, and Loui Eriksson lit the lamp twice for the Stars, who lead the Pacific Division by four points over Anaheim. Antti Miettinen also scored and Mike Smith gave Marty Turco a breather in net, making 24 saves in the win.
Turco, who has won 10 of his last 13 starts, is 8-4-1 with a tie, two shutouts and a 1.94 goals-against average in 15 career games against St. Louis.
Just two days before today's trade deadline, Dallas defenseman Sergei Zubov had a screw inserted into a fractured bone in his foot and will not skate for the next three-to-four weeks. The 37-year-old has missed the past 17 games with the ailment and has missed 20 total games this season due to injury.
Despite playing in just 46 games this season, the Russian blueliner ranks first on the team in average ice time (25:41), third in assists (31) and fourth in points (35).
However, Dallas already has a replacement in defender Philippe Boucher, who was activated from injured reserve yesterday after missing the last 38 games due to a shoulder injury. In 28 games this season, Boucher has registered one goal, 10 assists and 24 penalty minutes.
Dallas has won seven of its last eight as the visitor and play the back end of consecutive road tests tonight. The Stars are 19-12-3 on the road this season.
The Blues begin a four-game homestand tonight after going winless over a three-game road swing (0-2-1). After dropping tests against Los Angeles and Anaheim, St. Louis was blanked by Phoenix, 2-0, on Sunday.
Manny Legace, who allowed two goals on 20 shots for St. Louis in Sunday's loss, has fared well in his career against Dallas. In 13 games versus the Stars, Legace is 5-2-1 with two ties, two shutouts and a 1.73 GAA.
Paul Kariya, who leads St. Louis with 36 assists and 51 points, has four goals and two helpers in three games against Dallas this season, but hasn't lit the lamp in his last six overall games and has just one assist over that span.
St. Louis also locked up one of its own before today's trade deadline, inking defenseman Barret Jackman to a contract extension on Monday. Terms of the contract weren't disclosed by the team, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports it's a four-year deal.
The 26-year-old Jackman has played in 58 games with the Blues this season, recording eight points (2 goals, 6 assists).
St. Louis, which is six points behind Vancouver and Nashville for the final two playoff spots in the Western Conference, has won three straight at home and is 18-10-5 as the home club this year.
Dallas is 2-1-0 versus St. Louis this season, but the Blues have won four of six and five of their last eight against the Stars. St. Louis has also won four straight at home in the series.
