(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins will resume hostilities this evening, as the teams meet at the Wachovia Center for an Atlantic Division battle in the City of Brotherly Love.
The Flyers are 3-0 against the Penguins this season and are playing for the first time since December 11, when Philadelphia notched a decisive 8-2 decision over visiting Pittsburgh. The game featured hat-tricks by both Joffrey Lupul and R.J. Umberger of Philadelphia and the teams also combined for 156 penalty minutes.
Philadelphia is undefeated versus the Penguins this season after losing all eight meetings with Pittsburgh last season. The Pens have taken nine of the last 13 encounters and six of their previous 11 tests in Philly.
Pittsburgh has 58 points on the year and is just one behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division lead. The Flyers are one point in back of the Penguins for third place.
The Flyers will try to rebound from an embarrassing outing their last time out, as they were crowned by New Jersey, 7-3, at the Wachovia Center on Tuesday night. Zach Parise and Patrik Elias each scored a pair of goals, leading the Devils to their fifth straight win over Philly.
Mike Knuble had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who had a four-game win streak snapped. Jeff Carter and Daniel Briere also tallied for Philadelphia.
Mike Richards added two assists to push his point-scoring streak to five games. The 22-year-old All-Star leads the Flyers with 55 points (21 goals, 34 assists) this season.
Antero Niittymaki allowed five goals on 20 shots before being lifted for Martin Biron, who allowed two scores on 16 shots.
The Devils went 5-for-8 on the power play en route to the blowout win.
Philadelphia is playing the third portion of season-high six-game homestand tonight. The Flyers, who are 10-6-5 in South Philly this year, will resume the stand after the All-Star break with Tuesday's test against Los Angeles.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, played its second game without superstar Sidney Crosby on Monday and dropped a shootout decision to visiting Washington.
Alexander Semin scored the game-winner in the final round of the shootout as the Capitals posted the 6-5 decision at Mellon Arena.
Evgeni Malkin had two goals and an assist, while Ty Conklin got the loss in net for giving up one goal on 17 shots in regulation and the game-winner in the shootout for the Penguins. Dany Sabourin started in net but was pulled after giving up four goals on 13 shots.
Before the game, Pittsburgh placed Crosby on injured reserve due to a high ankle sprain. The reigning Hart Trophy winner is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks due to the injury. Crosby is tied for second in the league with 63 points.
The Penguins are 14-8-1 as the visiting team this year and are kicking off a three-game road trip tonight. Pittsburgh will continue the swing with Tuesday's game in New Jersey.
