(Sports Network) - The Anaheim Ducks will begin their longest road trip of the season in their final game before the All-Star break tonight, as they take on the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center.
The Ducks missed an opportunity to jump back into first place in the Pacific Division with Wednesday's 2-1 loss against Detroit. The setback kept Anaheim one point back in the standings of Dallas, which was idle yesterday.
Chris Pronger had the lone tally and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 31-of-33 shots for the Ducks, who have dropped two straight on the heels of a six-game win streak.
The game was what you would have expected out of two of the top teams in the Western Conference, as the clubs combined for 34 penalty minutes in the first period.
All-Star Ryan Getzlaf assisted on Pronger's power-play tally to run his point streak to 15 games, the longest current run in the NHL. Getzlaf has six goals and 16 helpers during the burst and leads Anaheim with 39 assists and 58 points on the year.
The 39 assists for the third-year winger are already a career high, and the 58 points match last year's career best total.
Anaheim is 11-12-2 on the road this year, as the club begins a nine-game swing tonight that resumes on Wednesday after the break.
The Kings will enter the All-Star break with the fewest points in the league regardless of what happens tonight. Los Angeles has just 40 points on the season, nine fewer than Edmonton in the Western Conference.
Tampa Bay has the fewest points in the East with 45.
Los Angeles has lost two of its last three after failing to get any of its 27 shots past Detroit and Chris Osgood on Tuesday. The Red Wings defeated the Kings, 3-0.
Jason LaBarbera stopped 24-of-27 shots.
Still, the Kings have won four of their last six and are 7-5-0 in their previous 12 games.
Los Angeles plays the second of back-to-back home games tonight and is 11-16-1 at the Staples Center this year. Following the All-Star break, the Kings hit the road for eight straight games, including four in a row versus Atlantic Division residents, and won't return to LA for a game until February 15.
The Kings won the season opener with the Ducks in London, England, but have lost four straight to Anaheim since, including the club's second battle across the Atlantic Ocean.
The Ducks have won 12 of their last 17 versus the Kings and six of the last seven in the City of Angels.
