NFL Preseason Preview - Pittsburgh (1-0) vs. Buffalo (0-1)

By Tony Moss, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) - Rogers Centre in Toronto will be the site of Thursday night's meeting between the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers, as both teams resume their preseason schedule with the north-of-the-border tilt.

On Feb. 1st, the Bills announced that the team would play eight games over a five-year period in Toronto, and Thursday's contest marks the first installment in that series. On Dec. 7th, Buffalo will host the Miami Dolphins in the league's first regular season foray into Canada.

In addition to entertaining their Canadian fans, the Bills will be seeking to look much sharper than they did in last Saturday's 17-14 loss at the Redskins.

Starting quarterback Trent Edwards had particular trouble getting in rhythm, completing just 1-of-5 passes for 18 yards on the night. Another weak outing for the second-year pro, and a strong showing from backup J.P. Losman, could give rise to a quarterback controversy in Western New York.

Losman was 7-of-9 for 73 yards and a touchdown pass against Washington.

Rookie wideout James Hardy, the team's second-round draft choice out of Indiana, caught a 16-yard scoring strike from Losman in the second quarter for the team's only touchdown of the night.

On the injury front for Buffalo, tackle Patrick Estes (leg) and wide receivers Josh Reed (lower back) and Roscoe Parrish (sore knee) are among the notables not expected to be available against Pittsburgh. Pro Bowl tackle Jason Peters remains embroiled in a contract holdout and is not expected to be in attendance.

The visiting Steelers, meanwhile, will head to Toronto trying to build upon their 16-10 win over the Eagles last Friday.

That win did not come without a price, however, as backup quarterback Charlie Batch suffered a broken collarbone that will have him on the shelf an estimated 4-6 weeks.

In response, the team signed former Jaguars starter Byron Leftwich on Sunday to back starter Ben Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin indicated on Monday that Leftwich would see some time against Buffalo.

Also slated to see his first action of the 2008 preseason is former Pro Bowl nose tackle Casey Hampton, who has been on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list due to issues with his weight.

Star safety Troy Polamalu (hamstring) is among the notable Steelers who will not see action on Thursday.

The Steelers hold a 5-1 edge in the all-time preseason series with the Bills, including a 20-0 home win in the last such meeting, prior to the 2001 campaign.

Pittsburgh won a 26-3 affair when the teams last met in a meaningful contest, last Sept. 16th at Heinz Field.
