New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Michael McGee blocked Sam Glusman's 28-yard field goal attempt, giving Southern Miss a come-from-behind 30-27 overtime win over Troy in the New Orleans Bowl from the Superdome.
The Eagles' first possession in the extra session was successful, as Britt Barefoot managed to push a 39-yard attempt off the left upright and through in for a three-point Southern Miss lead.
On Troy's ensuing drive, Glusman lined up at the left hashmark for a 28-yard attempt, but his try was smothered at the line by McGee to wrap up the game.
"I was trying my best to get there so I just dove and gave it my all," McGee said.
Austin Davis threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-34 passes for the Golden Eagles (7-6), who recorded their 15th consecutive winning season by emerging victorious in their final five games.
Gerald Baptiste and Johnathan Massey posted TD receptions and Damion Fletcher gained 78 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown for Southern Miss, which dealt with the loss of wideout DeAndre Brown with a serious leg injury in the first quarter.
Levi Brown completed 26-of-43 passes for 255 yards and a TD for the Trojans (8-5), who had won two in a row. Jerrel Jernigan rushed for a touchdown and caught nine balls for 65 yards. Kennard Burton added a catch for another score.
Southern Miss began its comeback facing a 27-17 deficit with 9 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Eagles defense stopped Troy on a 4th-and-1 from their 39, and five plays later Davis found Massey wide open for a 35-yard touchdown and with the extra point were within three.
The Trojans went three-and-out on the next drive, and Fletcher's 22-yard dash helped set up Barefoot's 46-yard attempt with 2:50 to play. Troy failed to advance with a 4th-and-4 from its own 47 on its final possession of regulation as Brown was sacked for a big loss.
The Trojans jumped on top less than a minute into the contest, as Jorrick Calvin picked up a Davis fumble and rolled 17 yards into the end zone.
Davis took to the air to tie the game on the next series, finding Baptiste for a 64-yard pass only 48 seconds later. However, Troy answered when Brown hit Burton on a four-yard score -- a reception originally called incomplete then reversed on review -- and a 14-7 edge after one quarter.
Fletcher's eight-yard TD run knotted the game, the Glusman hit a 20-yarder for a 17-14 Troy lead with 3:03 left in the half. Barefoot capped the ensuing drive by drilling a 38-yard attempt on the final play before halftime.
Glusman's 34-yard make late in the third put Troy up by three once more, then a big punt return set the Trojans up on the Eagles nine-yard-line. Jernigan capped the brief series with a six-yard run for a 10-point Trojans margin.
"We played LSU earlier this year and blew a 28-point lead. After that, we knew nothing's in hand until the game's over," Brown said. "I expected it to be a close game and I was thrilled to be up 10 in the fourth, but we couldn't finish it."
