Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Ray Rice's 90-yard touchdown sprint highlighted a 280-yard rushing day and a school bowl record four touchdowns, as Rutgers ran away from Ball State, 52-30, in the International Bowl.
Rice finished 27 yards short of the all-time bowl rushing record set by Georgia Tech's P.J. Daniels in the 2004 Humanitarian Bowl. His 280 yards did set a Scarlet Knight single-game rushing mark.
The other records rolled in with every run. His 49 career touchdowns ties him with West Virginia's Steve Slaton in second place all-time in Big East history, four behind all-time conference leader Lee Suggs from Virginia Tech.
His 280-yard rushing day places him third in Big East single-game history. Former Miami Hurricane Edgerrin James amassed 299 yards in a 1998 contest against UCLA and West Virginia's Kay-Jay Harris rolled up 337 yards in a 2004 victory against East Carolina.
Rice also became the first Big East running back to eclipse 2,000 yards on the ground in a season.
Backed up against its own end zone, Rutgers turned to the nation's third leading rusher to create breathing room early in the third. He cut off left guard to the outside then delivered a stiff arm on Cardinals safety Eddie Burk before rolling the remaining 45 yards on a 90-yard sprint for a 31-9 lead with 11:13 left in the third quarter.
"That was the longest run of my life -- Pop Warner, high school -- and as I was getting to the goal line I knew I needed five more yards. I knew I needed to get there," said Rice.
The 90-yard burst tied a school record set by Chad Bosch in a 1996 game versus Temple.
After Nate Davis' 10-yard touchdown pass to Dante Love drew Ball State within 31-16, Rice dominated the next march and scored on a one-yard run for a 38-16 lead with 2:42 left in the third.
Ball State (7-6) never came closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
"Obviously, we were disappointed we didn't play with any consistency. We gave up some big plays," Ball State head coach Brady Hoke said. "I'm proud of our team, proud of all the guys on our team."
Mike Teel kept the balance with 303 passing yards and three touchdowns with one interception for Rutgers (8-5), which won a bowl game for just the second time following a victory over Kansas State in last season's Texas Bowl.
Teel's second touchdown followed a failed onsides kick almost midway through the fourth stanza. Initially, Davis hit Darius Hill in the back of the end zone for a 10-yard score and a 38-23 game, but Rutgers recovered the kick and Teel went up top for a 35-yard score to Tiquan Underwood.
Teel's final TD toss was a teardrop down the left sideline to Kenny Britt, a 47-yard strike that gave Teel a school-record 20 touchdown passes on the season.
Davis completed 25-of-49 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns, including a one-yard toss to Hill that rounded out the scoring. Love caught 13 passes for 169 yards and Hill hauled in nine passes for 89 yards.
The Scarlet Knights set the game's tone on the first series. Rice slipped to the outside for 21 yards on the first play then Teel lofted post pass to a wide open Tim Brown in the back of the end zone for a 36-yard score.
Teel's arm set up the run later in the first quarter. Underwood hauled in a 22-yard pass and Rice eventually lowered his shoulder and finished off the march with a one-yard run with 2:14 remaining.
Ball State used some razzle-dazzle on special teams to jumpstart its offense. B.J. Hill took a flip on a reverse, cut back and jetted to the Rutgers 41 on the kickoff. Darius Hill then hauled in a pass for 19 yards, eventually setting up Ian McGarvey's career-high 47-yard boot for a 14-3 game.
Jeremy Ito answered McGarvey's long kick early in the second stanza with a 53- yard bomb and the Cardinals answered on McGarvey's 24-yard chip shot with 6:50 to go.
After back-to-back punts, Rutgers found the end zone on another Rice one-yard TD run, the 47th of his career.
Love returned the ensuing kickoff 33 yards to the Ball State 48-yard line and McGarvey split the uprights on his third field goal of the half, a 32-yard boot as time expired to make it 24-9.
