Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Joe McKnight ran for 89 yards and a score, part of a three-headed rushing attack that helped eighth-ranked Southern California pummel UCLA, 24-7, and win the Pac-10 title.
Chauncey Washington rushed for 66 yards and a score, and Stafon Johnson tallied 73 yards for USC (10-2, 7-2 Pac-10), which also earned a spot in the Rose Bowl.
There is also an outside chance that the Trojans could play in the BCS title game on January 7 after losses Saturday night by Missouri and West Virginia.
John David Booty threw for 206 yards on 21-of-36 passing with one touchdown and interception each, as the Trojans claimed the conference crown for a sixth consecutive year.
Patrick Cowan completed 13-of-24 passes for 156 yards, a touchdown, and an interception for UCLA (6-6, 5-4), which ended its season with its fourth loss in five games.
Chris Markey led the Bruins' rushing attack with 49 yards on 17 attempts, but UCLA had 12 net rushing yards overall. Dominique Johnson caught four passes for 42 yards and a score.
The teams combined for six turnovers, but USC had just two and was able to move the ball all afternoon, gaining 437 total yards. The Trojans scored the first 17 points of the game and never looked back.
USC scored halfway through the first quarter, but it was a touchdown surrounded by offensive foibles. After USC stalled on the game's opening drive, the Bruins' Terrence Austin fumbled on a punt return. USC drove down to the UCLA 24 on the ensuing drive, but turned the ball over on downs. Washington was stopped on a 4th-and-1, and UCLA took over.
The Bruins then ran three plays before Markey fumbled on a run, on which he was stopped for a loss. Linebacker Keith Rivers recovered, giving USC the ball on the UCLA 32. The Trojans took advantage of the opportunity, as Booty completed a 27-yard pass to Stanley Havili, and McKnight ran five yards for a touchdown to put the Trojans up, 7-0, with 7:34 left in the stanza.
USC, though, also had a drive end with a missed 40-yard field goal, and one with an interception. UCLA punted three times, Cowan completed one pass, and the Bruins gained 17 total yards.
Things improved in the second quarter, when USC notched another touchdown on the first drive. The Trojans marched 79 yards in 12 plays, which Washington finished with a 10-yard run, carrying a few UCLA defenders into the end zone. It put USC up 14-0 with 10:26 left in the half.
USC added a field goal with 45 seconds left, when David Buehler booted a 46- yarder through the uprights.
But on the ensuing drive, Cowan passed the Bruins to their only score of the game. He connected with Austin for 36 yards down to the USC 18, and capped the drive with a nine-yard scoring strike to Johnson with seven ticks on the clock.
Johnson made a one-handed catch on the left border of the end zone, hauling in the pass with his right hand as he fell down. The play brought UCLA within 17-7 at the break.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the final minutes of the stanza resembled the start of the game, when UCLA and USC fumbled on consecutive possessions. UCLA got the ball back as a result, but Cowan was intercepted by Terrell Thomas on the second play of that drive.
That gave the Trojans the ball on the UCLA 43, which led to their third touchdown shortly into the fourth quarter.
USC faced a 3rd-and-goal from the 12-yard-line after committing a holding penalty at the two. But Booty found Fred Davis over the middle, and Davis ran into the end zone, putting USC up 24-7 with 12:03 left.
