Clemson, SC (Sports Network) - Cullen Harper threw for 266 yards with three touchdowns and ran for another score, as 20th-ranked Clemson moved within one conference victory of a trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game after a resounding 44-10 win over Wake Forest.
The Tigers (8-2, 5-2 ACC) host Boston College in Death Valley next Saturday. If Clemson wins that contest, it will clinch the Atlantic Division title with a non-conference tilt against rival South Carolina left on the regular season schedule.
Mark Buchholz drilled three long field goals and C.J. Spiller returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to cement the victory in the third stanza. James Davis ran for 62 yards and Spiller added 54 on the ground in Clemson's fourth straight victory.
Aaron Kelly tied then broke the school record for touchdown catches in a season, hauling in two touchdowns with 93 yards receiving on 10 catches. Tyler Grisham was another of Harper's favorite targets, catching nine passes for 100 yards.
Riley Skinner, on pace to set an ACC record for completion percentage in a season, was an efficient 21-of-30 for 170 yards, but he tossed an interception without a touchdown pass. Micah Andrews had 42 yards rushing and Josh Adams added to the ground game with 41 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown for Wake Forest (6-4, 4-3), which lost its grasp on a possible conference championship repeat with a narrow loss last week at Virginia followed by Saturday's setback to the Tigers.
Clemson wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard, marching 69 yards on 12 plays to paydirt. On the drive's initial third down, Harper tossed a 15- yard strike to tight end Michael Palmer. A pass interference penalty on another third down moved the chains, and two plays later, Harper maneuvered his way into the end zone from seven yards out for the early lead.
Wake Forest's first drive moved in the wrong direction, and Clemson took advantage with another three points. Its drive accounted for just 24 yards, more than enough to put Buchholz in position for a 48-yard field goal.
Finally, the Wake Forest spread offense found open space on its second offensive possession. The 14-play, 71-yard drive featured a pair of crossing patterns to Zac Selmon for 16 yards and Kenneth Moore for 20 yards into Tigers territory. Inside the 10-yard line, Adams plunged into the end zone from two yards out for a 10-7 game.
Clemson's offense answered right back. Another lengthy march -- 12 plays and 79 yards including two third-down conversions -- ended in the end zone. Harper found Kelly for a 13-yard completion on 3rd-and-10, and later in the drive, the signal-caller lined up in the shotgun and threw a dart to Grisham for a five-yard score with 12:27 left in the half.
The Tigers high-octane attack kept rolling later in the second stanza, driving to a record-tying touchdown. A 28-yard punt return by Spiller set the Tigers up with a short field, and Harper's 10-yard touchdown toss to Kelly pushed the edge to 24-7. Kelly's touchdown reception was his 10th of the season, tying a school record.
Buchholz's 48-yard field goal earlier set his career long, but he pushed it four yards higher on his 52-yard boot as the half expired for a 27-7 lead. The Tigers scored on all but one first-half possession, racking up 239 total yards with 189 through the air.
Sam Swank's 52-yard field goal cut the deficit to 27-10 early in the third quarter, but the Tigers special teams again came up special. Spiller received the ensuing kickoff, cut off the right side, stiff-armed the kicker and tight-roped the sideline for a 90-yard TD return and a 34-10 lead.
A 46-yard field goal by Buchholz and Kelly's record-setting 11th touchdown catch of the season capped the scoring.
