NCAA Game Summary - Virginia at Miami-Florida

Final Score: Virginia 48 - Miami-Florida 0

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Jameel Sewell completed 20-of-25 passes for 288 yards and one touchdown, also adding 28 yards and one score on eight rushes as 23rd-ranked Virginia steamrolled Miami-Florida, 48-0, in the final game at the historic Orange Bowl.

"It was certainly a terrific performance on his part to step up and give our team what it needs," said Virginia head coach Al Groh of his quarterback. "As a leader of the team, the way he plays is symbolic of all of the rest of the players of the team."

Mikell Simpson rushed 22 times for 93 yards and two touchdowns for the Cavaliers (9-2, 6-1 ACC), who have won two straight and snapped an 0-15 record in school history on the road against opponents from Florida.

John Phillips led the receiving corps with four catches for 77 yards, and Maurice Covington caught three balls for 50 yards and a TD.

Kyle Wright had a horrible game, passing for just 94 yards on 9-of-21 completions, including three interceptions for the Hurricanes (5-5, 2-4), who have lost four of five and close out their Orange Bowl tenure with the worst shutout loss in the stadium's history.

"It was a tough one today, a big-time tough loss for us," said Hurricanes head coach Randy Shannon. "I feel very bad and disappointed for the city of Miami, Dade County and the University of Miami. I was expecting a better turnout from us as a team and I'm disappointed because it hurts. The fans were out tonight, the atmosphere was right but we just couldn't get anything started."

Javarris James gained 53 yards on 15 carries in the loss, eclipsing Miami's previous worst defeat at home, a 44-0 loss to Notre Dame in 1973.

The Hurricanes will play their final two games at Virginia Tech next Saturday and at Boston College on November 24 before calling Dolphin Stadium home beginning next season.

Virginia scored on its first possession, as Covington hauled in a Sewell pass and rumbled 29 yards for a score with 8:26 to play in the opening quarter.

Keith Payne added a five-yard run for another TD late in the first for a 14-0 Cavaliers lead.

Early in the second, Chris Gould was perfect from 33 yards out and the visitors went up 17-0.

Sewell made it 24-0 on a keeper from one-yard-out almost 3 1/2 minutes later, then Simpson added another one-yard rushing score with 4:56 left before halftime and Virginia had a staggering 31-0 advantage.

The onslaught continued in the second half as Simpson rolled in untouched for a one-yard rushing touchdown and a 38-0 game with 4:12 played in the third.

Gould made a 41-yarder with 5:43 left in the contest, and a 44-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Chris Cook with 2:26 to play completed Virginia's domination.

"You certainly have to understand that this is their night because it's a historic place that I have a lot of respect for," noted Virginia defensive end Chris Long. "We have a lot of respect for the program, but at the same time everybody wants to win a football game. So there was a football game going on today and one team had to come out on top."
