Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Paul Smith had a career day, passing for 313 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to a 56-7 dismantling of the Conference-USA rival Houston Cougars.
With his performance, Smith became the school's single-season and career passing leader at Tulsa (7-3, 5-2 C-USA), while the Golden Hurricane take over the top spot in the conference's West Division.
Anthony Alridge ran for 91 yards on 16 carries for the Cougars (6-4, 5-2), who saw their four-game win streak snapped in blowout fashion.
Tulsa scored on the game's opening possession, with Smith crossing the goal line on a three-yard run.
Later in the first quarter, he hooked up with Brennan Marion for a 53-yard scoring strike.
Those two connected again for a 32-yard TD at the 3:24 mark of the second quarter, giving the Golden Hurricane a 21-0 lead.
The Tulsa defense then recovered a fumble on Houston's next possession, and Smith tossed a 51-yard touchdown to Charles Clay on the very next play.
Smith threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jake Collums on the final play of the half, as Tulsa went into the locker room with a sizeable 35-0 lead.
Smith got right back down to business early in the third quarter, finding Dion Toliver for a 37-yard scoring strike.
Tarrion Adams and Jamad Williams each added touchdown runs to pad Tulsa's lead, while Terrance Ganaway avoided the shutout for Houston with a five-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
Smith now has 3,467 yards and 32 touchdowns this year, and has thrown for 9,338 yards for his career; all of which are records at Tulsa.
