East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Chad Henne threw four touchdown passes, including the go-ahead 31-yard connection to Mario Manningham with 2:28 remaining, as 15th-ranked Michigan rallied past Michigan State, 28-24, in the 100th meeting between the two schools.
Henne completed 18-of-33 passes for 211 yards and was intercepted once. Two of his TDs came in the final quarter, as the Wolverines rallied from a 10-point deficit. Mike Hart ran for 110 yards on 15 carries and Manningham caught eight balls for 129 yards, including two touchdowns.
Hart returned to action after sitting out the last two games with an ankle injury. Henne missed last week's contest with a shoulder ailment.
Michigan (8-2, 6-0 Big Ten) extended its winning streak to eight games and retained the Paul Bunyan Trophy for a sixth consecutive season.
Brian Hoyer threw for 161 yards on 19-of-35 attempts with one touchdown and an interception for the Spartans. Javon Ringer collected 128 yards on the ground, while Jehuu Caulcrick had 84 yards rushing with two scores and Devin Thomas had seven receptions for 65 yards.
Michigan State (5-5, 1-5), which has lost five of its last six games, came out strong in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points, but faltered in the late stages.
With 7:40 remaining in regulation, Caulcrick's second one-yard touchdown run gave the Spartans a 24-14 lead.
"We had some outstanding drives by our offense," said Spartans coach Mark Dantoinio, referring to his team's improved play in the second half. "I thought Caulcrick and Ringer did some tremendous things out there, we caught the ball better, and we moved the ball up and down the field a little bit."
The Wolverines quickly responded on the ensuing possession, driving 79 yards on seven plays in 48 seconds, as Henne threw a 14-yard strike to Greg Mathews to cut the deficit to 24-21.
Michigan completed the dramatic comeback when n 3rd-and-12 Henne lofted a ball to Manningham, who hauled in the pass in the right corner of the end zone. It took the Wolverines two minutes to drive 65 yards on nine plays.
The Spartans drove to the Michigan 42 in the final two minutes, but Hoyer threw incomplete on fourth down, and the Wolverines ran out the clock.
"We were very effective offensively in the first quarter," said Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr, "and we played good defense. But for the next quarter or two quarters, they did a great job of shutting our running game down and they played inspired football."
Michigan State took the opening kickoff and drove 56 yards on 10 plays before settling for a 36-yard field goal by Brett Swenson.
After the Spartans went three-and-out on their second possession, Henne capped a 5-play, 62-yard drive with a 11-yard touchdown pass on a fade route to Manningham with 3:54 left in the opening quarter.
The key play was an inside handoff to Hart, who cut back to his left and sprinted through a gaping hole in the defensive line for 37 yards to the Spartans' 11. Two plays later, Henne connected with Manningham to go ahead 7-3.
On the first play of the second quarter, Jamar Adams intercepted a Hoyer pass and returned the ball to the Spartans' 42. Once again, a big run by Hart set up another Michigan score. Hart powered his way through the defense, bouncing off tackles, before being shoved out of bounds at the 10.
Then, on a 3rd-and-goal from the five, Henne threw a perfect strike to Carson Butler to give the Wolverines a 14-3 lead with 12:46 remaining.
The Spartans orchestrated an impressive 14-play, 75-yard drive on their first possession in the second half. The drive featured 13 rushing plays, including Caulcrick's one-yard touchdown run to make it a 14-10 game. Michigan State had the ball for 6:49 and was 3-for-3 on third downs.
On the final play of the third quarter, Ringer was pinned near the left sideline, but broke a tackle and ran across the field. He picked up a couple of key blocks, and sprinted 72 yards to the Michigan five.
Hoyer used play-action and found Kellen Davis all alone in the end zone for a 5-yard score five seconds into the fourth. Michigan State drove 83 yards on three plays in only 54 seconds to take a 17-14 lead.
