NCAA Game Summary - Clemson at Duke

Final Score: Clemson 47 - Duke 10

Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Cullen Harper threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another score as 25th-ranked Clemson pounded Duke, 47-10, in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest at Wallace Wade Stadium.

The Tigers (7-2, 4-2 ACC) have now won three straight games since suffering consecutive losses to conference rivals Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.

Harper completed 17-of-26 passes for 184 yards, and threw both of his TD passes to Aaron Kelly. James Davis led Clemson with 118 yards on the ground and also posted a long touchdown run.

"Clemson had too many big plays and certainly we give them credit," Duke coach Ted Roof said. "That was the best group of backs that we've seen. James Davis and C.J. Spiller are fantastic football players. Sometimes we were in position to make a play and couldn't finish it off. In this game, sometimes you have to give credit to really good players."

Clemson has a 22-4 record against the Blue Devils since 1981 and the Tigers have come out on top in nine of the last 11 contests.

Duke (1-8, 0-6) has dropped 23 straight ACC games and hasn't won at all since posting a 20-14 victory at Northwestern on September 15. The Blue Devils are just 1-28 in their last 29 games overall.

Thaddeus Lewis was 15-of-26 for 160 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Blue Devils. Eron Riley caught a TD pass to account for Duke's lone touchdown.

The Tigers trailed 7-3 after 15 minutes of play, but grabbed control of the game with 23 unanswered points in the second quarter.

Clemson took its first lead of the contest midway through the second quarter, when Harper connected with Kelly on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 8:34 left in the opening half. Harper lofted a pass towards the right edge of the end zone and Kelly snared the ball before falling down inbounds.

The Tigers would then score 17 points in the final 1:10 of the first half to take a 26-7 advantage into the locker room.

Harper extended the lead to 14-3 with a three-yard touchdown run with 1:10 left. His TD scramble came just one play after a 43-yard completion to Tyler Grisham.

Clemson recorded a safety with 45 seconds left, when Michael Hamlin sacked Lewis inside the end zone. The Tigers then pushed their lead to 19 points with 31 seconds remaining when Spiller returned the ensuing free kick 84 yards for a touchdown.

Clemson extended its lead to 33-7 early in the third quarter on a 70-yard touchdown by Davis. On the first play after the Tigers picked off a Lewis pass, Davis charged down the right sideline to give his team a 26-point advantage with 10:37 left in the third.

The Tigers went ahead 40-7 in the final minute of the third quarter on a four- yard TD pass from Harper to Kelly.

Duke kicked a field to make it 40-10 early in the fourth, but the Tigers came back with a TD on their next drive to push the lead to 37 points. Tribble Reese, who came in to relieve Harper, tossed a two-yard touchdown pass to Brian Linthicum, making it a 47-10 game with 6:50 left in the contest.

The Blue Devils reached the scoreboard first as they went ahead 7-0 on Lewis' seven-yard pass to Riley with 8:07 left in the first quarter. Clemson would pull within 7-3 on a 40-yard field goal by Mark Buchholz with 4:18 remaining in the opening period.

"This place will lull you to sleep a little bit," Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said. "History indicates that. It's a little tough to get motivated when you come up here. Being behind 7-0 didn't surprise us. We were behind Central Michigan at home and behind 3-0 against Maryland at their place. I think it's a good sign of a team's maturity that they don't get flustered."
